Founded in 1937, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid is a nonprofit legal organization dedicated to providing economic, social, and housing justice to low-income and vulnerable individuals and families in the First Coast region.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity, JALA operates with an annual budget exceeding $8 million, managing over 35 grants each year.

JALA is in search of a Vice President of Finance to oversee our financial operations in alignment with our mission.

As a key member of the Executive Management Team, the Vice President of Finance plays an essential role in shaping and executing JALA's comprehensive financial strategy to support our mission and advocacy goals.

This position is responsible for managing and supervising the accounting department, which focuses on JALA's financial health, reporting, budgeting, fiscal policies, and compliance.

The Vice President of Finance serves as a fiduciary alongside the President & CEO, the Executive Management team, and the Board of Directors.

This role includes ensuring financial compliance for government contracts and private grants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the President and CEO to advance JALA's mission and vision, ensuring alignment between financial, operational, and programmatic goals.
  • Advise and assist the board in its financial oversight responsibilities. Work with the board to establish an annual budget and engage external consultants as necessary.
  • Supervise budgeting processes, implementation, tracking, and reconciliation to assess progress. Present financial metrics to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, regulatory compliance, and audit standards.
  • Oversee essential accounting functions, including accounts payable, cash receipts, and general ledger operations.
  • Handle grant management concerning planning, budgeting, compliance, and reporting for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
Ensure all grant reports are completed accurately and submitted punctually.

  • Maintain strong internal control measures and oversee financial, compliance, and regulatory audits.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting, optimizing banking relationships and implementing strategies to enhance cash positions.
  • Provide regular reports, as requested, to keep the board and Executive Management Team informed about JALA's financial status and compliance efforts.
  • Offer effective day-to-day supervision and conduct regular professional evaluations of accounting staff, assisting in identifying resources for skill development and motivation.
  • Ensure the accounting department is dedicated to delivering excellent service to staff, including the identification, development, and implementation of new systems that best support JALA's team.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Human Resources Officer, Chief Technology Facilities Officer, Development Director, and other senior leaders.
  • Provide financial guidance and support to all JALA program offices and units, as well as employees with financial responsibilities.
  • Act as a secondary fiduciary for JALA's 401(k) plan, overseeing the preparation of the plan's financial statements and the annual audit.
  • Perform additional duties as required to lead our financial operations in support of our mission.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of extensive finance experience, preferably within the nonprofit sector, encompassing accounting, auditing, team management, and experience in developing and implementing financial systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in budgeting and accounting software, as well as database management, is required.
  • CPA and/or MBA credentials are preferred.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills and the capacity to work effectively with both external and internal stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proven experience in grants management related to planning, budgeting, compliance, and reporting for government, corporate, and foundation grants is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple detailed projects and see them through to completion with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to handle and maintain confidential information.
  • Experience with MIP Sage / Abila-related products is preferred.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate advanced Excel proficiency.

Compensation:
Starting at $90,000, depending on experience.
