Peraton is at the forefront of providing management and technical expertise for NASA's scientific balloon initiatives, which facilitate significant scientific endeavors for NASA and various academic institutions across the globe.

Scientific balloon missions afford researchers an economical and efficient means to access near-space environments for extended periods.

These missions are considerably less expensive than satellite launches and allow for the deployment of substantial experiments (some exceeding 5000 lbs) that can operate for weeks or even months.

Our balloon missions have contributed to pivotal scientific theories and discoveries in areas such as cosmic rays, gamma ray and x-ray astronomy, optical and UV astronomy, atmospheric sciences, and cosmic microwave background research.


Our team is based at the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) in Palestine, TX, where we engage in the design, analysis, construction, and assembly of support systems and balloon gondola payloads for various missions.

We conduct launches from diverse locations across the United States (including Texas, New Mexico, and Hawaii) and internationally in regions such as Antarctica, Sweden, New Zealand, and Australia.

Our engineering and technical personnel are instrumental in supporting the launches and recovery operations of balloons and payloads both domestically and globally.

The NASA Balloon Operations Contract (NBOC) program is currently seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our dedicated team in Palestine, Texas.


We are looking for a candidate who can assist in the manufacturing, testing, integration, and operational phases of NASA Balloon missions from the initial concept through to flight.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide support to the NBOC II program in the application of electrical circuits, assemblies, and devices across various platforms, including balloon and flight hardware, ground support systems, testing equipment, and facility modifications.

Conduct intricate tasks involving electrical devices.

Plan the manufacturing, installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical equipment.

Collaborate directly with engineers from other disciplines to enhance production efficiency and value.

Serve as an internal consultant, offering technical advice on complex projects.

Design electrical systems and circuits; fabricate, test, verify, and integrate electrical systems.

Troubleshoot and repair equipment; oversee inspection and maintenance programs.

Evaluate technical specifications and issue procurement requests; participate in meetings, prepare reports, and deliver presentations to clients and management.

Prepare design documentation, including technical text, illustrations, tables, and schematics as required.

Create project plans and specifications using computer-aided engineering and design software.

Estimate material, construction, and labor costs along with project timelines.

Test installations/systems; analyze data while adhering to all relevant electrical and construction safety regulations.

Must be willing to travel to support campaigns in various global locations.

Must possess or be able to obtain a passport.

Must meet the NSF Physical (Medical) requirements to work in Antarctica.

Must provide proof of COVID vaccinations.

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of two years of relevant experience.

Experience in the design and production of balloon flight hardware.

Proficient in troubleshooting electrical components and testing equipment.

Experience in testing and qualifying hardware for flight, including the operation of environmental test chambers.

Background in Electrical Engineering, particularly in flight or balloon hardware, ground support equipment, or electrical construction.

Familiarity with ISO J-STD-001 requirements for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies.

Knowledge of ISO/WHMA-A-620 requirements and acceptance criteria for cable and wire harness assemblies.
