Process Engineer

Location: Salem, OR

Reports to: Operations Director

As a Process Engineer, you will be an integral part of the Operations team, responsible for crafting innovative strategies and methodologies to tackle engineering challenges. Your focus will be on defining the sequence of operations or procedures necessary to produce and assemble products that align with the organization's quality and cost standards.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Overseeing project execution (establishing and adhering to budget and timeline, supervising construction, training personnel, coordinating with QC/QA, safety, health, environmental, and maintenance) for projects up to $5M or participating as a team member in larger project initiatives.
  • Offering technical guidance to plant safety professionals on safety initiatives while designing or redesigning work processes to mitigate workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • Leading projects valued between $3-5M and managing project contractors and consultants.
  • Designing and executing capital permits, projects, and engineering studies as assigned to support operational objectives.
  • Managing project budgets to ensure targeted returns on investment while adhering to Ingredion's ethical, safety, and engineering standards.
  • Identifying, developing, and initiating capital projects with a timeline of one to two years, while supporting the maintenance of the plant's five-year capital plan.
  • Ensuring completed projects meet design specifications and that maintenance, operation, safety, and training documentation is current upon project completion.
  • Monitoring plant processes to optimize the use of manufacturing supplies and utilities.
  • Implementing systems and programs that achieve or surpass quality and production targets while minimizing supply costs.
  • Representing Ingredion operations to third-party agencies and customer auditors.
  • Providing technical assistance to maintenance and operations teams, including process evaluations, troubleshooting, process optimization, and maintaining historical data to monitor and control key operational parameters.
  • Leading initiatives for continuous improvement of processes through optimization, training, and maintaining the department's technical expertise.
  • Identifying opportunities to enhance operations to boost output, reduce waste, and lower costs.
  • Collaborating with the plant leadership team to develop strategies for continuous improvement of safety culture and fostering an injury-free workplace.
  • Supporting Ingredion's 2030 Safety and Sustainability initiatives.
  • Implementing the Ingredion Performance System (IPS) reliability objectives by utilizing the management system to effectively establish and sustain best operating practices with teams to achieve optimal operational performance sustainably.
  • Managing the Management of Change (MOC) program to provide environmental, safety, health, quality, and regulatory impact assessments of facility modifications during initial planning and post-completion.
  • Staying updated in the field; evaluating new technologies and concepts; developing, assessing, and seeking approval for innovative ideas to enhance process efficiency, facility safety, and product quality.
  • Exhibiting strong interpersonal skills, enabling effective teamwork, consensus building, and relationship fostering across various organizational levels and functions.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical preferred).
  • 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing setting preferred.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and systems, including basic chemistry, heat and material balances, P&ID development, mechanical and physical/chemical separations, evaporation, drying, material handling, control systems, GMP, and energy management.
  • Experience in sectors such as food, chemical, biochemical, or pharmaceutical, with significant experience in engineering or operations preferred.
Skills for Success:
  • Exceptional communication abilities, capable of presenting technical information and preparing concise reports, documenting processes and operational procedures, and completing necessary engineering documentation including P&ID development for new or modified equipment and processes.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment, resourcefulness, initiative, and innovation in managing complex technical assignments with minimal supervision.
