Our ongoing efforts to improve healthcare involve identifying risks and enhancing safety through effective adverse event reporting. This role is pivotal in overseeing the adverse event reporting system, providing daily support for the detection, processing, and reporting of adverse events (AEs). The position also initiates and manages strategic risk reduction initiatives across the HMH Enterprise.

Responsibilities

A typical day for a Healthcare Risk Management Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Working collaboratively with Executive, Regional, Local, Nursing, and Clinical Leadership to foster a sustainable culture of risk prevention aimed at minimizing harm to patients and team members, enhancing the overall human experience, and reducing exposure across the HMH enterprise.
  • Partnering with Regional and local Campus Risk Management and Quality/Safety leadership to cultivate a culture of safety and reporting, promoting a Just Culture that encourages non-punitive reporting of adverse safety events.
  • Continuously refining the Hackensack Meridian Health Adverse Event Reporting platform to address stakeholder needs, improve efficiency, and ensure high-quality information is available.
  • Utilizing the adverse event reporting platform as a resource for leaders to gain insights into harm within their respective business units.
  • Leading the governance framework to facilitate decision-making and engage stakeholders in developing a reporting platform that meets the requirements of Enterprise Risk Management, the Department of Patient Safety and Quality, and the Office of Patient Experience.
  • Collaborating with data analytics to create de-identified dashboards that provide trend analysis.
  • Presenting findings at network and campus committees to raise awareness about system learning derived from reporting and feedback.
  • Integrating machine learning, artificial intelligence, and automation into the existing system while monitoring for unintended consequences and ensuring quality assurance.
  • Identifying barriers to reporting and developing solutions to enhance stakeholder involvement and improve the overall reporting culture.
  • Working with site risk, patient safety/quality, patient experience, and human resources leadership to address adverse events and grievances, utilizing analytical skills to recommend disposition strategies.
  • Promoting a safety culture where reporting is encouraged and the use of the Onelink adverse event reporting system is monitored, implementing interventions as necessary.
  • Overseeing risk management software to enhance risk mitigation and safety culture improvements across the network, encouraging a culture of reporting.
  • Providing timely monthly updates to senior leadership regarding site activities.
  • Creating and implementing new initiatives to promote a culture of safety and a secure environment for patients, visitors, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Conducting statistical analyses for review by relevant committees as needed.
  • Collaborating with all stakeholders to optimize workflows for event reporting and analysis.
  • Designing educational and training programs for the platform to facilitate clinical and operational risk reduction.
  • Envisioning, recommending, and implementing enterprise-wide clinical risk guidelines, protocols, and standards.
  • Developing Key Performance Indicators and Dashboards for Clinical Risk & Loss Prevention.
  • Providing litigation support to the HMH Legal Team and external Defense Panel Counsel.
  • Serving as a senior clinical risk advisor to the enterprise.
  • Leading or co-leading the Patient Safety Organization(s) for HMH.
  • Performing other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adhering to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the healthcare sector.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Healthcare Risk Management or Patient Safety is required.
  • Strong understanding of the following areas:
    • Project Management
    • Enterprise Risk Management
    • Process Review
    • Root Cause Analysis
    • Familiarity with Department of Health and Joint Commission requirements
    • Emergency Management
    • Regulatory Compliance

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Business Management, or a related health field.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  • Risk Management Certification.
