Position Overview:
Become a vital member of the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Roadway Design team and contribute to the advancement of Nebraska's transportation framework. This role offers the chance to engage in a diverse range of projects, from maintenance to new constructions, collaborating with various stakeholders including environmental groups, construction teams, and local authorities. You will acquire essential experience in guiding projects from initial concept through to completion, ensuring a safe and efficient transportation network for the public.

Key Responsibilities:

• Engage in the design of numerous rural and urban highway construction initiatives, including resurfacing and reconstruction tasks assigned to the Roadway Design Division.

• Develop various roadway elements such as horizontal and vertical alignments, cross-sections, earthwork, guardrails, and additional features.

• Assist in the design of erosion control measures and the execution of environmental processes. Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, designing culverts and stormwater systems.

• Create detailed roadway, culvert, and storm sewer cross-section plans.

• Draft various design specifics.

• Prepare preliminary and final project quantities and cost estimates.

• Document engineering decisions, write special provisions, and maintain accurate project correspondence files.

• Attend and contribute to project-related meetings and field inspections.

• Generate project-related documentation and reports.

• Coordinate highway design projects within the division and department, including collaboration with public service agencies such as municipalities, counties, and utility companies.

• Support and assist other engineering staff as required and undertake additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must achieve Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, with FE/EIT certification.
  • Experience in roadway, street, culvert, and storm sewer design.
  • Knowledge in preparing highway construction plans, cost estimates, and conducting highway inspections and surveying.
  • Experience in road design, including project coordination, technical computations, and familiarity with modern highway construction methods and materials.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation, Bentley Civil Powered by Open Roads Technology, ProjectWise, and GEOPAK.
Additional Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program or evaluated as equivalent by NCEES.
  • Valid driver's license or ability to provide authorized independent transportation.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is essential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of fundamental engineering principles related to highway project design and construction.
  • Strong organizational and public relations capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently under the supervision of a Professional Engineer.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a small design team.
  • Proficiency in or ability to quickly learn one of the latest versions of design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, or other related CADD platforms.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with NDOT's Roadway Design Manual and Standard Specifications for Highway Construction.
  • Experience with ProjectWise and OnBase or other document management systems.
