The Department

The Hutchins School of Liberal Studies is an interdisciplinary unit within the Arts & Humanities at Sonoma State University. Recognized nationally for its innovative, student-centered pedagogy, the Hutchins School emphasizes multi-disciplinary inquiry and the development of critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills necessary for navigating a multicultural and multiracial society. In small seminar settings, students and faculty explore topics from diverse perspectives. Various tracks within the undergraduate major prepare students for a range of careers and postgraduate studies, including pathways to elementary teaching credentials.

Position Responsibilities

We seek candidates with expertise across multiple academic disciplines and experience in interdisciplinary, seminar-based teaching, as well as large lecture formats, for a pool of temporary, part-time positions. The department is particularly interested in candidates with backgrounds in ethnic studies, literature, composition, education, child development, psychology, sociology, history, or science education to teach the following:

1) Teacher track service courses (e.g., LIBS 304, 'We Hold These Truths,' LIBS 312, 'Schools in American Society').

2) Courses in the Hutchins General Education Program (e.g., LIBS 100, 101, 102).

3) Courses on science in society or science education (e.g., LIBS 320B core seminars).

Applicants should indicate in their cover letter which courses they are interested in teaching, including any original course proposals that align with the core areas of study.

Qualifications

Required:

- M.A. or M.S. degree(s) in relevant fields (arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences, etc.).
- A minimum of one year of teaching experience.
- Successful candidates must demonstrate pedagogical skills suited to the noted course emphases, possess an interdisciplinary educational background, and be adept at leading seminar discussions and supporting student writing.

Compensation and Employment Conditions

Full-time positions entail a 15-unit workload per semester. Salary is contingent upon the number of units assigned, educational qualifications, and funding availability, with an anticipated range of $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month, prorated based on units worked.
