Department Insights

The Hutchins School of Liberal Studies is an interdisciplinary institution within the Arts & Humanities division at Sonoma State University. Renowned nationally for its innovative approach to Interdisciplinary Studies, the Hutchins School emphasizes student-centered teaching, multidisciplinary inquiry, and the cultivation of critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills necessary for navigating the diverse American landscape. In intimate seminar settings, students and faculty explore topics from multiple viewpoints. Various tracks within the undergraduate major prepare students for careers and advanced studies across a wide array of fields, including pathways to obtain elementary teaching credentials.

Position Responsibilities

We seek candidates with expertise across multiple academic disciplines and experience in seminar-based teaching methodologies (as well as large lecture formats) for a pool of applicants to fill temporary, part-time positions as they become available. The department is particularly interested in candidates with educational backgrounds and experience in ethnic studies, literature, composition, education, child development, psychology, sociology, history, or science education to instruct the following courses:

1) Teacher track service courses (LIBS 304, 'We Hold These Truths,' LIBS 312, 'Schools in American Society,' LIBS 327, 'Literacy, Language, and Pedagogy,' LIBS 330, 'The Child in Question,' and LIBS 392, 'Performing Arts for Children').

2) Courses in the Hutchins General Education Program (LIBS 100, 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, and 204). We particularly welcome instructors with experience in teaching writing support, first-year transition, and ethnic studies general education.

3) Courses addressing the intersection of science and society or science education (LIBS 320B core seminars). This core area includes courses that examine the relationship between science, technology, and society. Students will deepen their understanding of both the sciences and social sciences while engaging with critical issues raised by the societal applications of science and technology. Examples of LIBS 320B courses previously offered include: 'The Biased Brain,' 'Climate Change and Society,' 'Feminism in Science,' 'Informal Learning and STEM,' and 'Mathematics and Human Imagination.'

Applicants are encouraged to indicate in their cover letter any of the aforementioned service courses they are interested in teaching, as well as any original course proposals that align with the Core B offerings.

Qualifications

Required:

Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) or higher in relevant fields including arts, humanities, social sciences, or sciences. Applied degrees will also be considered.

A minimum of one year of teaching experience.

Successful candidates must demonstrate pedagogical skills suitable for the courses mentioned above. Instructors should possess an interdisciplinary educational background and/or teaching experience, be adept at leading seminar discussions, assisting with student writing, and engaging with undergraduates of varying academic abilities.

Compensation and Employment Terms

Full-time positions typically involve a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary will depend on the number of units assigned, educational qualifications, and available funding, subject to any salary increases as per CSU system faculty contracts.

  • Salary is commensurate with degree level and experience.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
  • The monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated based on the number of units worked and is disbursed in six monthly payments for each full semester.
  • Being selected as a candidate in the applicant pool does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and are contingent upon departmental needs and funding.
  • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Relocation expenses will not be covered for temporary faculty appointments.
  • Expenses incurred for attending interviews for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.
