The Department

The Department of Theatre Arts & Dance is committed to providing students with a nurturing environment where they can hone their skills and express their creativity through rigorous coursework and collaborative production of live performances. Our programs encompass various concentrations, including Acting, Technical Theatre, and Theatre Studies, offering a comprehensive foundation for students pursuing careers in the arts or further studies in fine arts.

Our faculty are actively involved in professional endeavors across the SF Bay Area and beyond, serving as directors, choreographers, dramaturgs, and more. Their creative scholarship and professional experience enrich the educational experience for students. We emphasize collaboration, collegiality, and holistic approaches in our work.

Our facilities include a 475-seat proscenium theatre, a 100-seat hybrid classroom/performance space, a 50-seat black box studio theatre, two dance studios, and an outdoor amphitheater. Many of our alumni have achieved success in various roles within the performing arts.

Duties of the Position

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in areas such as Costumes, Design Aesthetics, Drafting/Rendering, Lighting, Scenery, Sound, Stagecraft, Stage Management, Senior Projects, and/or Technical Theatre-based General Education courses. The specific assignment will depend on the candidate's expertise and departmental needs. The position requires on-campus presence for in-person teaching, course design, independent instruction, grading, and availability for office hours.

Professional Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must possess at least a Bachelor's degree in Theatre/Theatre Arts or relevant professional experience. An MFA in Theatre is preferred, along with 2-3 years of experience teaching theatre arts at the undergraduate level.

Rank and Salary

Full-time faculty typically have a 15-unit workload per semester. Salary is based on the number of units assigned, educational qualifications, and available funding, subject to faculty contract salary increases.

  • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
  • Monthly base salary is prorated based on the number of units worked and paid in six monthly installments for each semester.
  • Selection as a candidate does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and are contingent upon departmental needs and funding.
  • Temporary Faculty appointments are renewed on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Relocation expenses are not covered for temporary faculty positions.
  • Interview-related expenses for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed.

Temporary Faculty with three-year contracts do not need to reapply.

Temporary Faculty who have taught in the department within the past two years only need to submit an updated CV to remain in the pool. The hiring committee will review the Personnel Action File to determine if an additional interview is necessary.
