Assistant Title IX Coordinator and Civil Rights Investigator

The Assistant Title IX Coordinator and Civil Rights Investigator will undertake the essential functions of a Title IX Coordinator. This role encompasses the execution of the institution's Sexual Misconduct Policy, which includes conducting thorough investigations and offering support in response to allegations of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and other violations of the policy. Additionally, the Assistant will be tasked with investigating and reviewing complaints related to civil rights discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. These civil rights matters may involve claims of discrimination and harassment based on various protected categories, including but not limited to race, national origin, disability, religion, sex, gender, and gender identity, in accordance with federal and state laws. The Assistant will also lead proactive workshops and training sessions related to Title IX and Title VI.

This is a full-time exempt role that offers a hybrid work arrangement, which includes both on-campus and remote responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

The Assistant will collaborate closely with various departments and offices within the institution, including legal counsel, human resources, student services, diversity initiatives, and campus safety. The Assistant is expected to act impartially while conducting prompt and comprehensive investigations into reported incidents, providing detailed and unbiased reports that reflect the findings and align with relevant policies and legal standards. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Responding swiftly to reports of sexual misconduct involving students, faculty, and staff, including sharing resources and information on supportive measures and formal complaint processes;
  • Maintaining effective communication with key stakeholders;
  • Coordinating with campus partners to ensure appropriate referrals for support and implementing necessary supportive measures;
  • Creating investigative plans for each complaint;
  • Conducting interviews with complainants, respondents, and potential witnesses;
  • Collecting relevant documentation;
  • Drafting and distributing investigation reports;
  • Staying informed about new developments and best practices in Title IX and Civil Rights investigation procedures;
  • Conducting investigations into allegations of discrimination and harassment based on protected categories;
  • Facilitating Title IX and Title VI training sessions and maintaining relevant statistics;
  • Drafting and updating policies and internal procedures;
  • Keeping abreast of Title IX, Title VI, and related laws;
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. required, with consideration for non-J.D. candidates possessing a minimum of five years of experience as a Title IX or Civil Rights investigator in higher education;
  • Significant experience working with diverse populations, including communities of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and persons with disabilities;
  • Exceptional writing and analytical abilities.

Preferred Experience:

  • 2-4 years of experience in conducting investigations, ideally within the education or civil rights sectors;
  • Training in Title IX or Title VI;
  • Familiarity with higher education and student conduct practices;
  • Experience in handling sensitive topics with a diverse community;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including effective listening;
  • Demonstrated respect for individual needs;
  • Expertise in conducting confidential investigations;
  • Proficiency in interviewing and investigation techniques;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under time constraints;
  • Capacity to multitask, including managing several investigations simultaneously;
  • Ability to maintain neutrality and build credibility with a wide range of constituents.

Compensation: $75,000 to $95,000, based on qualifications and experience.
