Assistant Coordinator for Title IX and Civil Rights Investigations

The Assistant Coordinator for Title IX and Civil Rights Investigations will undertake the essential functions associated with the role of a Title IX Coordinator. This position is pivotal in executing the institution's Sexual Misconduct Policy, which encompasses the investigation of incidents and the provision of assistance following allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment, and other violations of policy. Furthermore, the Assistant Coordinator will be tasked with inquiries and assessments related to civil rights discrimination, harassment, and retaliation complaints. Civil rights matters may involve, but are not limited to, claims of discrimination and harassment based on race, national origin, disability, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, and other protected categories under federal and state legislation.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Coordinator will collaborate closely with various departments and offices within the institution, including Legal Affairs, Human Resources, Student Services, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives, and Campus Safety. The role requires acting impartially while conducting thorough investigations of reported incidents and providing a comprehensive, unbiased report detailing the findings and analysis in relation to applicable policies and legal standards. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Timely response to reports of sexual misconduct involving students, faculty, and staff, including sharing resources and information on supportive measures;
  • Maintaining effective communication with relevant stakeholders;
  • Coordinating with campus partners to facilitate appropriate referrals for support;
  • Developing investigative strategies for each complaint;
  • Conducting interviews with complainants, respondents, and potential witnesses;
  • Collecting pertinent documentation;
  • Preparing and issuing detailed reports;
  • Staying informed on new developments and best practices in Title IX and Civil Rights investigation protocols;
  • Facilitating training sessions on Title IX and Title VI compliance;
  • Drafting and updating institutional policies and procedures;
  • Remaining current on Title IX, Title VI, and related state and federal regulations;
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. required, with consideration for non-J.D. candidates possessing a minimum of five years of experience as a Title IX or Civil Rights investigator in higher education;
  • Significant experience working with diverse populations, including communities of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and persons with disabilities;
  • Exceptional writing and analytical abilities.

Preferred Experience:

  • 2-4 years of investigative experience, particularly in educational or civil rights contexts;
  • Training in Title IX or Title VI compliance;
  • Familiarity with higher education practices and student conduct policies;
  • Experience addressing sensitive topics with a diverse community;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening;
  • Demonstrated respect for individual needs and confidentiality;
  • Expertise in conducting sensitive investigations;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively;
  • Capacity to maintain neutrality and credibility with a wide range of constituents.
