Community Access Inc., established in 1974, is a leader in providing supportive housing and social services in New York City for individuals facing mental health challenges. We are committed to advocating for human rights, social equity, and economic opportunities for all. We believe that individuals are the best experts in their own lives. Our diverse programs span across 25 locations, offering over 1200 units of supportive housing in three boroughs, alongside initiatives such as the Howie the Harp Advocacy Center, East Village Access—a PROS program, Peer-driven Crisis Respite Center, Adult Home Initiative, and Assertive Community Treatment (ACT).
Department Insight
The Residential Crisis Support Program, also referred to as the Crisis Respite Center, serves as a short-term, peer-staffed alternative to psychiatric hospitalization, designed to create a nurturing and supportive atmosphere. Our goal is to foster a welcoming environment where guests, as we refer to participants, can acquire new recovery and relapse prevention skills. This is facilitated through 24-hour peer support, education in self-advocacy, self-help training, and mutual understanding. The program offers individuals experiencing a psychiatric or emotional crisis a brief stay (ranging from 14 to 28 days) that enables them to maintain daily routines and connect with community resources.
Guiding Principles
All staff, interns, and volunteers at Community Access are expected to understand and integrate specific principles into their interactions with program participants. These principles include:
- The right of program participants to self-determination.
- Respectful and clear communication.
- Services that promote recovery and healing, aligned with each participant's cultural background, experiences, identity, and values.
- Establishing clear professional boundaries to support the scope and possibilities of services.
Key Responsibilities
- Engaging with guests on a one-on-one basis.
- Facilitating workshops.
- Documenting progress notes.
- Assisting with meal preparation.
- Supporting guest rooms and general housekeeping duties.
- Accompanying guests on tasks, appointments, and community outings.
- Performing additional duties as assigned.
- Learning and executing all aspects of the admission process.
This position description reflects the essential functions assigned by management; it does not limit the tasks that may be assigned.
