Position Overview: The Crisis Intervention Advocate plays a crucial role in delivering essential support to individuals and families facing homelessness, those at risk of eviction, and clients seeking information about housing assistance and entitlements. This position involves responding to inquiries through our hotline and in-person visits, ensuring that clients receive immediate assistance with shelter access, rights advocacy, public benefits, health services, and guidance through the housing search and relocation process.

Working collaboratively within the Crisis Intervention Department, the Advocate reports directly to the Program Director and receives ongoing supervision from the Senior Director of Crisis Services. The role is aligned with the mission and objectives of the Coalition for the Homeless and adheres to the requirements of relevant funding sources.

Key Responsibilities:

The Advocate is responsible for:

1. Delivering direct support to clients utilizing the Crisis Intervention hotline and those who visit the program, including but not limited to: immediate referrals, advocacy for shelter access, housing assistance, food and clothing resources, benefits acquisition, employment or educational opportunities, health and mental health services, and clarification of client rights;

2. Cultivating and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of pertinent social service systems and agencies, including shelter intake processes, housing program guidelines, and benefits programs;

3. Educating and empowering clients to advocate for their rights regarding shelter and benefits;

4. Ensuring accurate and timely documentation of client interactions using the ETO database, maintaining up-to-date client files and case notes;

5. Notifying the Program Director and/or Senior Director of Crisis Services about client emergencies and assisting in the prompt delivery of necessary services;

6. Seeking regular guidance from the Program Director and supervision from the Senior Director to discuss clinical matters and advocacy trends;

7. Participating in regular staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities;

8. Undertaking additional responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director or Senior Director of Crisis Services.

Qualifications:

A minimum of an AA/AS degree in human services or a related health discipline is required (or a GED/High School Diploma with at least four years of relevant experience in social services). A BA/BS in social work, human services, or a health-related field is strongly preferred.

Experience in client advocacy and case management, particularly with underserved populations or those experiencing homelessness and disabilities, is highly desirable. Strong communication skills are essential, and prior experience in advocacy settings is beneficial. Fluency in Spanish or another language is strongly preferred.
