Overview

The Energy Portfolio Analyst plays a crucial role in conducting market research and analysis for the New York Power Authority's portfolio managers, executive leadership, and clients. This position is essential in supporting hedging transactions as a key member of our Market Analysis, Forecasting, and Hedging team. The Analyst will keep a close watch on regulatory changes that could affect the profitability of NYPA's portfolio and the costs incurred by its customers. Collaboration with portfolio managers, Risk, Finance, and IT is vital in establishing and validating forward price curves, positions, financial outcomes, and reporting for energy, capacity, fuel, carbon, and Renewable Energy Credits. This role provides an in-depth understanding of the complexities of a physical and financial energy portfolio, paving the way for potential future leadership opportunities in the energy sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and maintain all procedures, manuals, tariffs, market regulations, and other market elements that may influence operations and strategies.
  • Ensure timely submission of all necessary testing, regulatory filings, and reporting.
  • Review and challenge all invoicing for discrepancies or unusual reconciliations.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, KPIs, and other performance metrics.
  • Assist in preparing and presenting analyses of market anomalies that may impact enterprise risk management.
  • Compose analyses of market indicators, trends, and quarterly fundamental and market outlook reports.
  • Conduct analyses for NYPA's generation, load, and revenue forecasts, including weather normalization/load growth studies, variance analysis, and regression analysis.
  • Develop responses and supporting analytics for inquiries from internal and external stakeholders regarding market transactions and forecasting matters.
  • Stay updated on NYISO procedures, market issues, and reports.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiarity with Wholesale Electricity Markets, Fuel Markets, and associated Financial products.
  • Fundamental business, statistical, financial, and analytical skills.
  • Strong research and analytical capabilities.
  • General understanding of accounting principles.
  • Basic comprehension of the economic implications of decisions within the scope of authority.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and take initiative.
  • Effective communication skills with stakeholders both within and outside the organization.
  • Proficient in computer software and database management.
  • Basic knowledge of data analytics tools such as Tableau or Power BI is preferred.
  • Experience in database programming and querying using SQL, MS Access, VBA, SAS, Oracle, or similar is advantageous.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Analytics, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in an analytical role or equivalent combinations of education and experience.
  • Experience in a Utility or Energy Company is preferred.
