The Principal Application Infrastructure Specialist operates within the Application Services Division to manage the Authority's Software Ecosystem by executing tasks that support current applications and software frameworks, as well as deploying new applications and software systems, with a primary focus on Aveva PI System (previously known as OSISoft).
This role will leverage technical expertise to implement, support, maintain, and enhance the software framework, alongside Project Management capabilities to achieve these goals in a setting where decisions are influenced by policies, procedures, business strategies, functional objectives, and organizational priorities, under the guidance of IT Management and the IT Advisory committee.
The focus of this position is on supporting NYPA's Asset Health Monitoring Application suite, which encompasses Aveva PI, GE Smart Signal, GP Strategies Eta Pro, GE Asset Performance Monitoring, among others.
To maintain existing applications, the Principal Application Infrastructure Specialist efficiently oversees the resolution of operational issues, complies with all IT change management and incident reporting protocols, and ensures that applications are functioning correctly following any modifications. Additional support responsibilities include installing updates and patches and, when necessary, analyzing, designing, coding, and implementing changes to enhance functionality or adapt to business process modifications. When an application, its underlying software infrastructure, or hardware reaches the end of its lifecycle, this role is responsible for identifying and implementing replacement solutions to fulfill business objectives.
As technology and the utility sector evolve, so too must the solutions implemented to meet NYPA's business requirements. The significance of this role lies in ensuring operational efficiency, facilitating improvements in business processes, and providing enhanced information for informed management decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and engage in all technological aspects of application development and support, including reporting, interfaces, database design, patching, upgrades, and enhancements.
- Contribute to the overall architecture of existing enterprise application systems and the implementation of new applications, ERP solutions, and platform APIs.
- Collaborate with architects, developers, business analysts, and QA analysts to design, develop, and test applications.
- Assist in creating information systems blueprints, design patterns, and templates for optimal software development to ensure high levels of software reuse and migration towards service-oriented architecture (SOA).
- Support cloud solution resources, including IaaS and PaaS.
- Develop and assess plans and criteria for various projects and activities. Evaluate the feasibility and soundness of proposed proof of concept or solutions.
- Communicate and coordinate with other team leads, business leadership, and management to ensure appropriate integration of processes and modules across the organization.
- Develop and maintain technology roadmaps and assist in product roadmap development.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge in application architecture, design, development, and support, including large-scale enterprise system implementations.
- Ability to design complex software systems that are scalable, maintainable, and extensible.
- Proficiency in software engineering.
- Experience in leading the implementation and support of real-time systems and enterprise applications.
- Capable of leading medium to large teams.
- Adept at identifying and resolving complex issues in the software development process and influencing others towards solutions.
- Understanding of cybersecurity policies, as well as public and private cloud environments.
- Experience in project management, resource estimation, and schedule management.
Education, Experience, and Certifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
Occasional travel to various locations may be required.
The New York Power Authority is dedicated to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $108,000 - $148,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
