Organization:

Compass Family Services is a century-old nonprofit dedicated to addressing the urgent needs of families facing homelessness in San Francisco.

Our mission is to provide comprehensive assistance to families experiencing or at risk of homelessness, ensuring they have the resources necessary for immediate relief and long-term stability.


Program:

The Margot is a permanent supportive housing initiative that accommodates 160 formerly homeless households, including 40 families with children.


Staffing:

The Margot collaborates with three partner organizations: DISH (property management), Citywide (support services for single adults), and Compass Family Services (support services and children's programming for families).

In partnership with the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, our staff and residents have cultivated a vibrant community, offering a variety of support services for all residents.


Schedule:
Full-time, Monday through Friday, during standard business hours.

Compensation:
$25 - $30 per hour

Role Overview:

The Family Support Specialist will be an integral member of a dedicated team, providing holistic support to families residing at The Margot.

Responsibilities will include connecting families with essential community resources such as employment opportunities, childcare, and behavioral health services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist 25-28 families living on-site with case management.
  • Organize and facilitate community events for The Margot residents, including family and single adult activities such as monthly meetings, food distribution, social gatherings, arts and crafts, and holiday celebrations.
  • Welcome and orient new families to the community while conducting initial outreach.
  • Build positive relationships with families to foster connection, support, and trust.
  • Collaborate with families to set short and long-term goals for stability, self-sufficiency, and well-being.
  • Provide counseling, crisis intervention, and appropriate referrals to both internal and external services.
  • Address concerns regarding resident families in collaboration with Compass colleagues and partners from DISH and Citywide, including tenancy issues.
  • Conduct monthly unit inspections in partnership with property management.
  • Proactively engage with families exhibiting behaviors that may lead to eviction.
  • Support families during relocation processes.

Maintain accurate and current client records, promptly entering case notes, assessments, and service plans into Compass' Salesforce database and ONE System.

Complete mandated reporter training and file CPS reports as necessary.


Qualifications:
  • Fluency or high-level proficiency in both Spanish and English is essential.
  • Relevant experience in a social services environment, including counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Ability to assess safety concerns and de-escalate challenging situations.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by families experiencing housing instability.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles.
  • Familiarity with Bay Area housing and social service resources.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel); experience with Salesforce is advantageous.

Paid Time Off:
Nearly 4 weeks of vacation in the first year, increasing to just under 5 weeks in the second year, along with paid holidays, sick leave, and family leave.

Retirement:

After one year of employment, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account, which vests during years 2-5.
