POSITION OVERVIEW:

This role is designated for the following counties:

  • CLARKE
  • HART
  • OGLETHORPE

Applicants must either reside in these counties or be willing to relocate.

Under the guidance of experienced supervisors, the incumbent will learn to conduct inspections of red meat, related products, and processing facilities to ensure compliance with established legal standards. This includes performing both pre-slaughter and post-slaughter inspections. A personal vehicle or reliable transportation is required for this position. While the primary focus will be on the assigned areas, occasional travel outside of this region may be necessary, though it is expected to be minimal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Meat Inspector 1: $39,000 per year. Candidates must possess a vocational or technical degree in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, pest control, entomology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution; or a high school diploma or GED with one year of relevant experience; or two years of college coursework including 12 semester hours or 20 quarter hours in chemistry or life sciences.

Meat Inspector 2: $43,000 per year. Candidates must have a vocational or technical degree in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, pest control, entomology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution along with one year of directly related experience; or two years of college coursework including 12 semester hours or 20 quarter hours in chemistry or life sciences and one year of relevant experience; or two years of experience at the lower level or an equivalent position.

NOTE: The selected candidate will be required to complete USDA Inspection Methods training at the earliest opportunity following their hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

  • Experience in State or Federal Meat Inspection or Food Inspection.
  • A bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Animal Science, Environmental Science, Biology, or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
