Role Overview:

The Agriculture Inspector role is part of the Livestock and Poultry Program within the Animal Industry Division, emphasizing the monitoring, inspection, investigation, and sampling relevant to the GDA's initiatives.

Job Duties Include:

  • Conduct inspections of agricultural products, equipment, and facilities, including fish and logging operations, to ensure adherence to laws and regulations.
  • Assist in the collection of samples for the identification and analysis of petroleum products, pests, or suspected diseased animals.
  • Inspect horticultural products, livestock, and the effectiveness of livestock medications.
  • Examine commodities such as poultry, eggs, meat, and seafood for certification regarding wholesomeness, grading, and weight.
  • Perform inspections of facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with accuracy, sanitation, and regulatory standards.
  • Prepare detailed reports on findings, offer recommendations, and advise vendors, farmers, and processors on necessary corrective measures.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections at various sites involving livestock, exotic animals, and poultry.
  • Identify livestock to prevent disease outbreaks and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Address animal health complaints and oversee compliance measures.
  • Monitor animal exhibitions for disease detection.
  • Collect and analyze samples from cattle, swine, sheep, goats, and poultry.
  • Manage animal emergencies, issue quarantines and permits, and compile reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of work activities, inspections, and field actions.
  • Document all data in the official database as per established protocols.
  • Perform additional assigned duties, including shift work as necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Endure strong odors and varying temperatures.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Agriculture Inspector 1 – $37,

Requires a vocational or technical degree in relevant fields, a high school diploma or GED with experience, or college education in chemistry or life sciences.

Agriculture Inspector 2 – $40,

Similar educational qualifications as Inspector 1.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in related fields or experience in agricultural business management. Proficiency in animal industry practices, livestock management, and Windows systems; experience in livestock handling, inspection, and report writing is highly desirable. Strong communication skills, decision-making capabilities, and the ability to foster positive relationships are essential.
