Job Overview

Under the guidance of the Executive Director of Comparative Medicine, the Manager of Animal Care Operations is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive management of animal care operations, logistics, and equipment programs. This role includes supervising a team of operations technicians and ensuring the effective execution of their duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises operations technicians, including responsibilities for recruitment, onboarding, training, work assignments, approval of time off, performance assessments, and development plans.
  • Establishes a robust training framework for operations technicians, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and maintaining accurate training records.
  • Develops and enforces compliance protocols that align with institutional, federal, state, and local regulations concerning vivarium support areas, focusing on personnel safety, sanitation, waste management, equipment operation, and procurement processes.
  • Creates, reviews, and maintains essential documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, equipment guidelines, maintenance logs, and inventory records.
  • Conducts inspections and troubleshooting of equipment and systems, including but not limited to tunnel washers, autoclaves, and cold storage units.
  • Oversees the Quality Assurance program for all sterilization and washing equipment, ensuring thorough testing and accurate record-keeping.
  • Collaborates with Facilities Management to identify and resolve maintenance and repair needs, managing vendor relationships for equipment servicing.
  • Ensures compliance of vivarium loading docks with relevant regulations and supervises their operational use, coordinating the transport of supplies across facilities.
  • Manages the inventory of equipment and supplies, including tracking, storage, and disposal processes.
  • Oversees the management of hazardous materials, including ordering, inventory control, safe handling, storage, and disposal, along with necessary personnel training.
  • Leads the verification program for sanitization processes, which includes system testing, result analysis, and documentation.
  • Manages decontamination systems, ensuring proper maintenance, training, and scheduling.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of departmental vehicles, ensuring they are maintained, clean, and compliant with insurance and registration requirements.
  • Provides strategic recommendations for infrastructure and operational enhancements, collaborating with various departments to improve efficiency and processes.
Qualifications

Educational Background:

High School Diploma or GED is required; a Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred.

Licensure:

Must possess or be eligible for the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within 90 days of hire, and the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification within one year of hire. A valid California Driver's License is also required.

Experience:

A minimum of 5 years of experience in laboratory animal science, vivarium logistics, and cage washing is required, along with at least 2 years of leadership experience in an AAALAC accredited facility.

Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of performing moderate lifting, standing, walking for extended periods, and effectively executing essential job functions.
