Under the guidance of the Executive Director of Comparative Medicine, the Manager of Animal Care Operations is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive management of animal care operations, logistics, and equipment programs. This role includes supervising a team of operations technicians and ensuring the effective execution of daily tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Directly supervises operations personnel, including recruitment, onboarding, training, work assignments, approval of time off, performance assessments, and development plans.
- Establishes a robust training framework for operations staff, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and maintaining accurate training records.
- Develops and enforces compliance protocols that align with institutional, federal, state, and local regulations concerning vivarium support areas, focusing on personnel safety, sanitation, waste management, and equipment procurement.
- Creates, reviews, and maintains essential documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, equipment guidelines, and inventory logs.
- Conducts inspections and troubleshooting of equipment and systems, such as washers, sterilizers, and environmental control units.
- Oversees the Quality Assurance program for all sterilization equipment, ensuring thorough testing and documentation.
- Collaborates with Facilities Management to identify maintenance needs and coordinates with vendors for equipment servicing.
- Ensures compliance with regulations regarding vivarium loading docks and manages the logistics of supply transport between facilities.
- Administers the inventory of equipment and supplies, including tracking, storage, and disposal processes.
- Manages chemical inventory, including ordering, handling, storage, and training personnel on safety protocols.
- Leads the verification program for sanitization processes, including system testing and documentation.
- Oversees decontamination systems, ensuring proper maintenance and scheduling of training.
- Manages departmental vehicles, ensuring they are maintained, clean, and compliant with insurance and registration requirements.
- Provides strategic recommendations for infrastructure improvements, collaborating with various departments to enhance operational efficiency.
Educational Background:
A High School Diploma or GED is required, with a preference for a Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Licensure:
Must possess or be eligible for the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within 90 days of hire and the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification within one year. A valid California Driver's License is also required.
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years in laboratory animal science, including experience in cage washing and vivarium logistics, along with 2 years of leadership experience in an AAALAC accredited facility.
Physical Requirements:
Must be capable of performing moderate lifting, standing, walking for extended periods, and effectively executing essential job functions.
