The City of Vancouver's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services is seeking motivated individuals who excel in engaging with diverse populations across various age groups in recreational programs. This role involves upholding program integrity and regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants and staff, particularly in aquatic settings. Candidates should possess experience in these areas along with outstanding customer service and problem-solving skills. Key Responsibilities:

Core Duties:
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with a wide range of customers and team members.
  • Assist in maintaining a secure environment for all program participants and staff.
  • Understand and embody the City of Vancouver's core values: Compassionate, Collaborative, Inclusive, Innovative, Empowered; as well as relevant policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned based on program needs.
  • Adapt to a flexible work schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire, provided by the City of Vancouver.
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism, especially in emergency situations.
  • Exhibit a professional appearance and adhere to the established dress code while delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Successful completion of a background check for candidates aged 18 and older.
  • Positive references from previous employment.
Physical Demands:
  • Capable of performing some heavy lifting.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and endure various weather conditions.
Essential Skills:
  • Quickly and effectively respond to emergencies, documenting all incidents and safety hazards in accordance with City protocols.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with the public, program participants, and fellow city employees.
  • Monitor and engage with a large, diverse group of participants while managing multiple responsibilities.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  • Follow both written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department.
  • Complete necessary training and certification as required by the position.
Position Specific Qualifications

Lifeguard:
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • $300 training bonus upon successful completion of all training and orientation.
  • Knowledge of swimming safety regulations and practices.
  • Ability to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals utilizing the aquatic facility.
  • Willingness to learn and apply established emergency protocols.
  • Maintain physical fitness and mental alertness to respond to emergencies.
  • Capable of performing water rescue techniques.
  • Attendance at all staff meetings, orientations, and in-service training is required.
Qualifications:
  • Current Ellis & Associates Pool Lifeguard Certification (must remain valid throughout employment).
  • Ability to locate and operate all emergency equipment, including backboards, oxygen, and AEDs.
  • Capable of assisting a distressed guest to safety.
  • Successfully complete a swim test, which includes swimming 200 yards using a front-facing stroke without stopping, treading water for 2 minutes without hands, diving feet first to 9 feet, and retrieving a 10 lb brick from the bottom.
Swim Instructor:
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • $300 training bonus upon successful completion of all training and orientation.
  • Teach life-saving skills that can significantly impact individuals' lives.
  • Work with participants ranging from six months to senior citizens, teaching water safety.
  • Help participants develop lifelong safety skills and improve swimming endurance.
  • Ensure a safe aquatic environment for all participants.
  • Monitor pool conditions and ensure compliance with safety regulations while assisting with routine cleaning and maintenance.
Qualifications:
  • Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (must remain valid throughout employment).
  • Ability to supervise and ensure the safety of multiple children from drop-off to pick-up.
  • Capable of safely lifting and assisting children in and out of the water.
  • Successfully complete a swim test, which includes swimming 25 yards of various strokes and swimming at least 100 yards without stopping.
