The City of Vancouver's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services is seeking motivated individuals who excel in engaging with diverse populations in fitness and aquatic environments. As a Program Instructor, you will embody the City’s values by effectively demonstrating and verbally guiding participants through various aerobic, strength, flexibility, and balance exercises. Your responsibilities will include setting up and monitoring class equipment, ensuring its proper condition, and fostering positive interactions with all participants and staff. Adherence to safety protocols and facility regulations is paramount.Key Responsibilities
Fitness Program Instructor
- Demonstrated experience or training in fitness and group exercise facilitation.
- Ability to adapt exercise intensity levels and inspire participants in an enjoyable and supportive manner.
- Knowledge of exercise principles, basic choreography, and rhythm.
- Capable of lifting and/or moving items weighing up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Experience working with individuals with special needs is a plus.
- Ability to effectively showcase water fitness techniques from the poolside, utilizing music and cueing methods.
- Strong vocal projection to communicate instructions over ambient pool noise, with a cordless microphone provided.
- Understanding of exercise principles, basic choreography, and rhythm.
- Capable of lifting and/or moving items weighing up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Must possess or be able to obtain valid CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications within one month of employment.
- Fitness and Aquatic Instructors must obtain a national group or water exercise certification (such as ACE, AEA, AFAA, NETA, or equivalent) within six months of employment.
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to respond swiftly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Maintain composure and professionalism at all times, especially during emergencies.
- Exhibit a professional appearance, adhere to dress codes, and deliver exceptional customer service.
- Establish and nurture effective working relationships with the public, program participants, and fellow City employees.
- Interact positively with a diverse range of program participants.
- Ability to read, write, and follow instructions accurately.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Commit to maintaining certifications through ongoing education and training.
