General Overview: Employees are viewed as representatives of The Salvation Army and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that aligns with our mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate daily activities for children, including academic assistance, reading, recreational activities, and STEAM initiatives.
  • Foster an environment that reflects the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Assist in developing monthly thematic activities.
  • Integrate assigned themes with priorities focused on literacy, homework support, character development, and recreational engagement.
  • Support in planning, scheduling, and executing educational lessons.
  • Help create a safe, healthy, and inviting atmosphere conducive to learning and emotional support.
  • Assist in monitoring and reporting statistics for monthly evaluations.
  • Ensure classrooms are well-maintained and equipped with necessary teaching materials.
  • Oversee volunteer scheduling and commitments.
  • Organize activities for early release days.
  • Provide weekly reports to the supervisor.
  • Conduct monthly reviews of curriculum and material inventory.
  • Prepare snacks as required.
  • Assist with summer youth day camp operations during full-time hours.
  • Engage in special projects related to the After-School Program as needed.
  • Adhere to The Salvation Army's Protecting the Mission (PTM) protocols.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft PowerPoint is preferred.
  • Experience with electronic communication tools is required.
  • Ability to navigate integrated database applications and learn new software with basic training.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate of Arts Degree or a minimum of 2 years of experience working with children.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Understanding of early childhood curriculum principles and practices.
  • Effective communication and interaction skills with children, parents, guardians, colleagues, and the public.
  • Able to work with diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Computer literate, capable of using Salvation Army approved web-based programs and software.
  • Experience in working with volunteers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Must pass a background check conducted by The Salvation Army.
  • Must obtain a Washington State Food Handler's Permit.
  • Willingness to support the philosophy, goals, and mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Complete Protecting the Mission (PTM) training within the first thirty (30) days of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files and file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate a complex multi-faceted telephone system.
  • Ability to operate a desktop and/or laptop computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand oral and written information.
  • Ability to walk, sit, stand, and bend intermittently and/or continuously.
  • Ability to exercise good hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly.
  • Ability to see clearly both up close and at a distance.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
