Are you dedicated to providing exceptional care for animals in need? The role of Animal Care and Adoption Support Specialist at US_Prog_Jov_Direct_CPA may be the perfect fit for you.

The Animal Care and Adoption Support Specialist (ACASS) plays a vital role within the medical team at our Adoption Center, which serves approximately 5,000 dogs and cats each year.


The ACASS is responsible for delivering compassionate care and assisting veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians during examinations, treatments, and monitoring of all animals. This is achieved through the application of low-stress handling techniques and adherence to best practices in shelter medicine, while following all organizational policies and protocols.

The ACASS ensures that the physical and behavioral needs of the animals are met, providing care that includes husbandry tasks, observation and reporting of any signs of illness or injury, record-keeping, data entry, low-stress animal handling, and the preparation and administration of various medications.

Collaboration with other medical team members is essential to facilitate the delivery of veterinary care and to communicate health status information regarding the animals to staff, volunteers, and the public.

The center currently provides shelter and adoption services for various groups of animals, including:

  • Animals rescued from cruelty and neglect.
  • At-risk animals identified through community engagement.
  • Medically-compromised stray animals.
  • Animals surrendered by owners seeking new homes.
  • Animals transferred from partner shelters and rescues.


All medical care is provided in accordance with the shelter medicine protocols of the Adoption Center.

To excel in this position, the ACASS must be a conscientious team player, committed to delivering quality, compassionate care and supporting both the medical and adoption teams in facilitating successful animal placements.


Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Nursing Care and Veterinary Support (60%):
Utilize veterinary medical knowledge to provide compassionate and quality patient care, employing low-stress handling techniques at all times.

Monitor animals closely for signs of illness or injury, documenting and communicating findings accurately.

Ensure timely and accurate data entry into medical records, including information from other departments and diagnostic results.

Prepare samples for laboratory submission and follow up as necessary.

Treat all animals, colleagues, and volunteers with respect and care.

Assist with medical procedures, including handling for injections and monitoring during recovery.

Maintain an efficient flow of animals through the shelter.

Administer food and medications as directed by veterinarians.

Support direct care staff in meeting the medical needs of the animals.

Assist in the preparation of health certificates and medical records.

Identify grooming needs and facilitate bathing and grooming as required.

Transport animals and their medical records within the organization as needed.

Update medical records to reflect the status of animals as necessary.

Communicate effectively with team members regarding animals' medical needs.

Participate actively in daily medical rounds and team meetings.

Learn and adhere to organizational philosophy and protocols.

Housekeeping and Maintenance (40%):
Ensure animals are housed in clean and comfortable conditions.

Maintain cleanliness and organization in exam rooms and medical work areas.

Conduct regular cleaning and disinfection of kennels and equipment.

Follow all safety and cleaning protocols.

Assist in inventory management and supply stocking.

Report any unsafe conditions to supervisors.

Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of basic animal care and handling; familiarity with veterinary protocols.

Experience with low-stress animal handling techniques.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Willingness to learn and implement new protocols.

Basic computer skills; familiarity with shelter software is a plus.
Physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform tasks throughout an 8-hour workday.

Compensation and Benefits:
The starting pay rate for this role is competitive and falls under a collective bargaining agreement.
