Washington, Washington, D.C., United States Groundwork Collaborative Full time
Position Overview

Reports to: Deputy Director & Chief of Communications

Status: Full time; exempt

Position Summary

Founded in 2018, Groundwork Collaborative embodies the principle that We Are The Economy: the prosperity of our economy hinges on the well-being of all individuals. We advocate for progressive economic policies and strive for narrative transformation that enhances public accountability, dismantles monopolistic power, and prioritizes those historically marginalized from economic success. Collectively, these efforts are aimed at fostering a robust and resilient economy.

Our distinctive framework – a blend of strategic communications, research, and advocacy – empowers us to influence narratives and policies with authority and effectiveness. We engage with four primary audiences: the media, policymakers, economic analysts, and influential leaders, utilizing targeted campaigns and timely research to promote an inclusive economic perspective.

We are astute, strategic visionaries who can identify opportunities to advance our mission and shape national economic discussions, while also recognizing new audiences for our resources and supporting the impactful work of our partners to align our collective objectives. Our approach to narrative transformation is bold, focusing on making the right economic messages resonate in the future rather than relying on current popular sentiments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and implement strategic communications for issue campaigns that reflect our vision.
  • Lead and cultivate a high-performing communications team that is agile and strategic.
  • Design, execute, and oversee a comprehensive communications strategy in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Utilize a variety of communication tools, including media outreach, digital engagement, and editorial content, to promote Groundwork's economic narrative.
  • Identify and create materials to highlight organizational initiatives, campaigns, and partnerships.
  • Draft and refine reports, opinion pieces, press releases, statements, and messaging materials.
  • Foster productive relationships with media representatives covering economic topics.
  • Assess and enhance existing communications frameworks as needed.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of press, editorial, and digital content.
  • Manage communications-related programming and events.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in developing and executing comprehensive communications plans.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a commitment to high-quality standards.
  • Ability to integrate Groundwork's narrative work across diverse voices.
  • Strong interest in progressive economic messaging and fluency in economic policy, with the ability to simplify complex concepts.
  • Experience in team management and a passion for mentoring junior staff.
  • Background in leading successful communications for issue campaigns.
  • Awareness of the news cycle and how to position Groundwork's economic narrative within it.
  • Proactive and resourceful in navigating a complex media landscape.
  • Skilled in multitasking and thriving under tight deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Interest or experience in digital strategy.
  • Experience with major releases or launches, including campaigns and policy research.
  • Creative and innovative, willing to explore new solutions to challenges.
  • Commitment to a just and inclusive economy that provides opportunities and dignity for all, with a focus on dismantling systemic barriers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the progressive economic policymaking community.
  • Established relationships with journalists and media professionals, particularly those focused on economic and political issues.
