Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is in search of a skilled communicator and writing expert to enhance the Human Resources division's initiatives aimed at attracting, nurturing, and retaining a talented workforce. This role is ideal for an individual who is dedicated to serving an internal audience and can effectively deliver timely information and updates regarding essential processes, programs, and employee benefits. Additionally, the position involves providing strategic assistance for various communication campaigns. Candidates should have a background in diverse communication fields, including writing, digital content management, social media engagement, and the execution of strategic communication plans.

The Human Resources Directorate caters to the needs of over 7,000 employees, including research and operational specialists from more than 80 countries. Effective communication is vital in fostering an environment that positions ORNL as an outstanding workplace and a premier scientific institution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and distribute news articles and feature stories related to HR projects and initiatives on ORNL's internal communication platforms.
  • Collaborate with the HR Communications Coordinator to devise strategies for conveying HR functions and services to ORNL personnel, management, and leadership, covering topics such as benefits, wellness, and performance management.
  • Assist in developing a content calendar to consistently share HR initiatives with ORNL staff.
  • Manage the social media presence of the HR department.
  • Partner with HR, IT, and Communications teams to ensure that HR's internal and external websites are informative, current, and aligned with ORNL's web design standards.
  • Regularly meet with the HR Communications Coordinator and HR subject matter experts to exchange feedback and adjust plans as needed.
  • Work alongside technical editors, graphic designers, and other communications teams at ORNL to ensure compliance with grammar, style, and branding guidelines while sharing best practices.
  • Adhere to environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Uphold a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of organizational values and ethics.
  • Support ORNL's mission by aligning actions, priorities, and interactions with core values such as Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace culture.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in producing communication materials for general audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to handle urgent requests promptly and professionally.
  • Experience in writing and supporting communications within the HR sector.
  • Competence in developing, updating, and maintaining engaging website content, ensuring a consistent schedule for fresh information.
  • Ability to manage communication projects from inception to completion, collaborating effectively with team members.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint, WordPress, or other content management systems.
  • Strong organizational skills to balance multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail under pressure.
  • Previous experience with government agencies or similar organizations.
