Position Overview

Salary: Competitive starting salary range of $54,000 to $64,000, determined by qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

The Oak Park Public Library is in search of a proactive, engaging, and community-oriented full-time Middle School Community Coordinator to become a vital member of our Middle & High School Services team.

In collaboration with the Manager of Middle & High School Services, the selected candidate will help advance the library's vision, mission, and strategic goals by:

  • Establishing connections with local middle schools
  • Delivering exceptional customer service at library service points
  • Supporting library initiatives and projects
  • Collaborating on library-wide projects across various service areas and with local middle schools and youth organizations

Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is advantageous; while not mandatory, fluency in Spanish will enhance your ability to provide outstanding customer service and foster relationships with our Spanish-speaking students and community members.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement

  • Fostering and maintaining collaborative relationships with the Middle and High School Services (MHS) Team, library colleagues, community youth organizations, educators, middle school librarians, and resource staff to support middle school students.
  • Partnering with schools, patrons, and community agencies to promote the Oak Park Public Library and achieve outcomes for our tween patrons and MHS team.
  • Designing and delivering programs and services for middle school students both within the library and in the community.
  • Building partnerships with youth organizations and stakeholders to create tailored services for middle schoolers.

Programming Development

  • Creating clubs and programs specifically for middle school students.
  • Coordinating and implementing middle school programming in schools, community settings, and library branches.

Service Delivery

  • Providing direct customer service support at public service desks, addressing patron inquiries, and offering professional instruction and reference assistance as needed.
  • Upholding library policies and actively promoting the A Library for Everyone initiative.
  • Sharing information about library and community events and resources.
  • Engaging with students and ensuring adherence to behavioral guidelines in middle and high school areas.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding and support of the library's vision, mission, and strategic priorities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly and effectively to various stakeholders.
  • Service-oriented mindset with a commitment to delivering exceptional service to patrons, staff, and the community.
  • High level of professionalism and integrity, with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient in a variety of technologies, both physical and digital, including Windows PCs, social media, and common software applications.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and independent thinking.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is a plus.

Education and Experience

Required

  • Experience in planning, creating content, and delivering programs aimed at youth.
  • Experience collaborating with library staff, educators, and community youth organizations.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Experience in elementary or middle school teaching.
  • Experience working in a public library setting.

A combination of education, professional experience, and lived experiences that demonstrate the ability to meet the position's requirements may be considered.

Position Details

This is a full-time position, requiring 40 hours of work per week.
