Job Overview

The Breast Imaging Specialist is responsible for operating advanced radiologic equipment to capture high-quality images of breast tissue for diagnostic evaluation as per the directives of the radiologist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gathers essential information regarding the patient and the imaging procedure.
    • Confirms the patient's identity and checks the physician's request.
    • Ensures the appropriate screening protocol is followed.
    • Checks the patient's pregnancy status when necessary.
  • Educates the patient about the imaging process.
    • Confirms the patient has agreed to the procedure and addresses any inquiries.
    • Provides clear explanations and instructions at suitable times, ensuring comprehension.
    • Offers information on breast self-examination through demonstrations or educational materials.
    • Clarifies the importance of adequate compression for obtaining quality mammograms.
    • Answers questions regarding radiation exposure and the potential need for additional images.
    • Informs the patient about the timeline for receiving the radiologist's report.
  • Evaluates the data collected during the assessment phase to determine optimal imaging settings.
    • Assesses whether the patient is adequately prepared for the procedure.
    • Identifies any factors that may contraindicate the procedure, such as medications or insufficient preparation.
    • Applies and adjusts radiation protective measures as needed.
  • Captures high-quality images during the examination.
    • Documents the location of any breast lumps, scars, or moles using radiopaque markers and/or notes on the patient's clinical history.
    • Acquires images by applying the maximum tolerable compression to the breast.
    • Conducts invasive procedures as instructed by the radiologist, adhering to departmental protocols.
    • Reviews the mammographic images for proper positioning, technique, artifacts, and compression, ensuring the correct anatomical area is imaged.
    • Determines the necessity for repeat or additional images and obtains them as required.
    • Completes the minimum number of mammography examinations as mandated by regulatory standards.
  • Records patient care details, examinations, and medical history accurately.
    • Ensures the correct order is logged into the health information system.
    • Documents relevant patient history.
    • Notes any deviations from established protocols.
    • Processes images through the computer-aided detection system.
    • Verifies information in the medical records system and completes necessary documentation.
    • Conducts medication reconciliation as per departmental guidelines.
  • Coordinates with various departments to ensure timely completion of procedures.
    • Collaborates with scheduling and nursing units to arrange patient appointments according to established protocols.
    • Prioritizes scheduling to maintain efficient unit operations and workflow.
  • Maintains imaging equipment and work area in optimal condition.
    • Performs routine quality control checks on equipment as required by regulatory standards.
    • Ensures adequate supplies for patient care and office needs are available.
    • Reports any equipment malfunctions to the service provider and management.
  • Implements procedures during equipment downtime.
    • Organizes the rescheduling of patients during periods when equipment is not operational.
  • Attends departmental meetings or reviews meeting summaries.
  • Advocates for breast health in the community through participation in health awareness events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a Radiologic Technology Program accredited by JRCERT.
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Six to twelve months of relevant experience to enhance procedural knowledge.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved program.
  • Completion of advanced level examination in Mammography within 18 months of employment.
  • Clearances as required by state regulations.

Work Environment

  • This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but may provide guidance to other staff members.

Position Type and Work Hours

  • Schedules will be determined based on operational needs, including rotating shifts and on-call duties.
  • Local travel between facilities may be required.

Physical Demands

This role may require assistance for lifting heavy objects and involves various physical activities.
