Deaf Culture Specialist

We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable American Sign Language (ASL) Educator to join our team at Friendship Public Charter School. The ideal candidate will be fluent in ASL, have a deep understanding of Deaf culture, and possess a passion for teaching high school students.
Key Responsibilities- Curriculum Development: Develop and implement a comprehensive ASL curriculum that aligns with state standards and school goals.
- Teaching: Teach ASL courses to high school students, ranging from beginner to advanced levels.
- Classroom Environment: Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
- Instructional Techniques: Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and resources to accommodate different learning styles.
- Assessment and Evaluation: Assess and evaluate student performance, providing constructive feedback and support for improvement.
- Cultural Awareness: Promote awareness and understanding of Deaf culture and community within the school.
- Professional Development: Stay updated with the latest developments in ASL education and integrate them into the curriculum.
- Student Engagement: Host a monthly in-person convening of students taking the course.
- Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Studies, Education, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Valid state teaching certification.
- Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience, preferably at the high school level.
- Fluency in American Sign Language.
- Strong communication, organizational, and classroom engagement skills.
- Proficiency in digital tools and software, including online curriculum, Google Classroom.
- Ability to inspire and motivate students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.
- Successful online teaching experience as well as knowledge of online platforms (e.g. Zoom, Nearpod).
- Experience with project-based learning and student-centered teaching methods.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and community.
