Position Overview

As a Healthcare Support Specialist, you will work closely with a registered nurse, contributing significantly to the healthcare team by providing essential clinical support to ensure a safe and compassionate patient care environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Implement patient care plans as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Administer physical care to patients, including hygiene assistance, grooming, and changing linens, adhering to established protocols.
  • Provide general patient support such as lifting, turning, and using adaptive equipment in accordance with guidelines.
  • Monitor patient conditions by taking vital signs and checking blood glucose levels as per established procedures.
  • Assist patients during meal times, ensuring their needs are met.
  • Conduct regular patient rounds and respond promptly to patient requests.
  • Document patient care accurately and in compliance with organizational standards.
  • Maintain a tidy patient environment by organizing room clutter.
  • Collect and label specimens following established protocols.
  • Guide and train new nursing assistants to uphold performance standards.
  • Engage in additional tasks as required by departmental or organizational objectives.

Qualifications

Education

Required:

A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is necessary unless the candidate possesses a nursing assistant certification.

Experience/Certification

Required:

Recent experience or training in clinical patient care is essential.

Preferred:

  • Enrollment in a Nursing, Pre-Med, or Physician Assistant undergraduate program with at least one completed patient care rotation at the time of hiring. OR
  • Possession of a valid license, certification, or enrollment as a student in a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Mental Health Technician, or EMT-accredited program at the time of hiring.

*For Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, certification as a Nursing Assistant at the time of hiring or completion of a nursing assistant training program and certification within 120 days of employment is required, remaining active thereafter. Nursing students currently enrolled in a formal nursing program who have successfully completed at least one clinical rotation can remain employed for 120 days or longer if they become certified.

Skills

Required:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Basic proficiency in mathematics and computer skills.
  • Ability to perform, modify, and document all physical therapy skills with thoroughness and proper sequencing.
  • Healthcare Provider CPR certification is mandatory.
  • Familiarity with DPH/OEMS regulations is essential.

Preferred:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, catering to a diverse patient population.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, anticipating challenges and developing effective strategies.
  • Deliver high-quality service, demonstrating initiative in prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and adapting to changes.
  • Attention to detail is crucial.
