Role Overview:

Athene is on the lookout for a Senior Legal Advisor to enhance our retail legal team. In this capacity, you will deliver thorough, precise, and timely legal counsel to bolster our expanding retail annuity and private placement annuity operations. By working closely with Athene's retail annuity and global wealth divisions, alongside colleagues in legal and compliance, you will be integral to the daily functions of our esteemed retirement services organization.

The ideal candidate will possess substantial expertise in life insurance products, tax legislation, and securities compliance. You will adeptly navigate intricate state insurance regulations, distribution frameworks, and operational hurdles. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Legal Retail, your contributions will be pivotal in shaping the trajectory of retirement services at Athene.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage closely with senior business leaders on the development of sophisticated fixed, indexed, and variable annuity products.
  • Act as a strategic legal consultant on private placement insurance transactions, collaborating consistently with Athene's insurance business teams and legal counterparts.
  • Partner with senior business executives and legal department members on operational projects.
  • Assist internal clients in analyzing and resolving service and operational challenges.
  • Provide legal support across various Company departments, including sales, marketing, operations, and compliance.
  • Serve as the primary advisor on regulatory issues impacting Athene's private placement annuity operations.
  • Coordinate efforts across different Athene functional areas to advise on and facilitate business initiatives.
  • Evaluate and present key matters and transactions to senior leadership.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and contacts within the wider legal and compliance community.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree with over 7 years of legal experience, particularly in financial services, insurance, or other regulated sectors.
  • Proficient understanding of federal securities laws, including FINRA regulations, and tax laws governing insurance products.
  • Experience with SEC registration statement submissions, including N4 and S1.
  • In-depth knowledge of annuity services, operations, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Aspirations to become a subject matter expert on various transactions.
  • Ability to conduct securities and tax research utilizing diverse resources.
  • Collaborative mindset with a proven track record of working effectively with employees, clients, and external advisors.
  • Exceptional judgment and the ability to exercise independent decision-making, prioritize tasks, delegate responsibilities, and drive processes forward while managing multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Capacity to swiftly process and filter large volumes of complex information, identifying appropriate actions in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to navigate competing priorities in a fast-paced business landscape.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex subjects clearly to senior business and legal team members.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
