Job Overview

Jensen Hughes is offering a hybrid opportunity for a Senior Fire Protection Engineer with expertise in life safety code consulting, sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and passive fire protection. The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in applying National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards, along with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC). Familiarity with performance-based fire engineering design is advantageous. The selected individual will collaborate with a diverse team of Fire Protection Engineers and provide comprehensive engineering and technical support at a prominent government facility in the metropolitan area, with potential for a hybrid work schedule. This role presents an exciting chance to acquire extensive fire protection experience and knowledge across various fire suppression, alarm, and life safety systems in a distinctive and challenging environment.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct design reviews and commissioning services for fire protection, fire alarm, and life safety systems, including design evaluations, verification of as-built drawings, construction inspections, and development of functional performance tests.
  • Assess designs to ensure compliance with the owner's intent regarding serviceability, maintainability, and operability, while adhering to applicable building, fire, and life safety codes.
  • Provide technical guidance in crafting statements of work for projects concerning all aspects of the built environment on behalf of building owners and stakeholders.
  • Utilize fundamental fire and life safety engineering principles to devise performance-based solutions for design challenges not addressed by existing codes and standards.
  • Evaluate existing facilities for compliance with building codes and offer recommendations for enhancements, including site surveys and analysis of life safety systems.
  • Perform calculations related to egress sizing, allowable building height and area, sprinkler system water supply capacity, and smoke control equipment.
  • Support building management with fire alarm and fire protection system inspections, testing, and maintenance.
  • Propose modifications and updates to existing fire protection and life safety codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Analyze the impact of new code adoptions and code cycle changes on construction project requirements and building operations.
  • Meet client expectations by completing tasks within designated timelines and effectively communicating with project team members and stakeholders.
  • Draft technical correspondence and reports to address specific technical concepts as required by assigned tasks.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in life safety, active and passive fire protection, and fire alarm systems consulting, design review, inspections, and commissioning.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license is required.
  • Strong report writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to present clear and technically sound fire protection engineering strategies with effective communication and negotiation skills.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively, embracing professional challenges and contributing to the long-term growth of Jensen Hughes.
