Job Overview

JENSEN HUGHES offers a hybrid opportunity for a Lead Fire Safety Engineer with expertise in life safety code consulting, sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and passive fire protection.

The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in applying National Fire Protection Associates (NFPA) codes and standards, along with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).

Experience in performance-based fire engineering design is also advantageous.

The selected applicant will collaborate with a team of Fire Protection Engineers from varied backgrounds and experience levels.

This role provides an exciting chance to gain extensive fire protection experience and knowledge across various fire suppression, fire alarm, and life safety systems in a distinctive and challenging environment.

Responsibilities

Conduct design reviews and commissioning services for fire protection, fire alarm, and life safety systems, including:

  • Reviewing designs and submittals
  • Verifying as-built and redline drawings
  • Performing construction surveys and inspections
  • Developing and partially witnessing pre-functional checklists
  • Executing functional performance tests

Assess designs to ensure they meet the owner's intent based on contract serviceability, maintainability, and operability requirements, as well as compliance with relevant building, fire, and life safety codes.

Provide technical assistance in crafting statements of work for projects related to all aspects of the built environment on behalf of building owners and associated stakeholders.

Apply fundamental fire and life safety engineering principles to devise performance-based solutions for design challenges.

Evaluate existing facilities for compliance with the building code of record and offer recommendations for enhancements.

Perform calculations related to means of egress sizing, maximum allowable building height and area, sprinkler system water supply capacity, and smoke control equipment.

Offer engineering support to the building management office for fire alarm and fire protection system inspection, testing, and maintenance.

Propose additions, modifications, and updates to existing fire protection and life safety codes, standards, and regulations.

Conduct impact analyses on the consequences of new code adoption and code cycle changes on construction project requirements and building operations.

Meet client and customer expectations by completing assigned tasks within the designated timeframe and effectively communicating with project team members, clients, customers, and others.

Compose technical letters and reports to address specific technical concepts as necessary.

Requirements and Qualifications

Minimum of 7+ years of experience in life safety, active and passive fire protection, and fire alarm systems code consulting, design review, inspections, and commissioning.

Professional Engineering (PE) license is required.

Exceptional report writing and interpersonal skills.

Ability to present clear and technically sound fire protection engineering strategies, along with strong communication and negotiation skills.

Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a team, embracing professional challenges and aspiring to contribute to the long-term growth of Jensen Hughes.
