Job Overview
Jensen Hughes offers a hybrid opportunity for a Senior Fire Protection Engineer with expertise in life safety code consulting, sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and passive fire protection. The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in applying National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards, along with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC). Familiarity with performance-based fire engineering design is advantageous. The selected individual will collaborate with a diverse team of Fire Protection Engineers. This role involves providing full-time engineering and technical support at a prominent government facility, with the possibility of a hybrid work arrangement. This position presents an exciting chance to acquire extensive knowledge and experience in various fire suppression, fire alarm, and life safety systems within a unique and challenging environment.
Responsibilities
- Conduct design evaluations and commissioning services for fire protection, fire alarm, and life safety systems. Responsibilities include reviewing designs and submissions, verifying as-built and redline drawings, performing construction surveys and inspections, developing and partially witnessing pre-functional checklists, and executing functional performance tests.
- Design evaluations will assess whether the designer has fulfilled the owner's intent based on contract serviceability, maintainability, and operability requirements, ensuring adherence to all relevant building, fire, and life safety codes, and verifying that fire protection systems are adequately sized for identified requirements.
- Provide technical guidance in crafting statements of work for projects concerning all aspects of the built environment on behalf of building owners and stakeholders.
- Utilize fundamental fire and life safety engineering principles to devise performance-based solutions for design challenges not addressed by existing fire protection codes and standards.
- Assess existing facilities for compliance with the applicable building code and offer recommendations for enhancements, including site surveys and analysis of life safety systems, fire detection and alarm systems, smoke control systems, and both active and passive fire protection systems.
- Perform calculations related to means of egress sizing, maximum allowable building height and area, sprinkler system water supply capacity (i.e., hydraulic calculations), and smoke control equipment.
- Provide engineering support to building management for fire alarm and fire protection system inspection, testing, and maintenance.
- Recommend modifications, updates, and additions to existing fire protection and life safety codes, standards, and regulations.
- Conduct impact analyses on the implications of new code adoption and code cycle changes on construction project requirements and building operations.
- Meet client and customer expectations by completing assigned tasks within designated timeframes and effectively communicating with project team members, clients, and stakeholders.
- Draft technical letters and reports to address specific technical concepts as required by assigned tasks.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in life safety, active and passive fire protection, and fire alarm systems code consulting, design review, inspections, and commissioning.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license.
- Strong report writing and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to articulate clear and technically sound fire protection engineering strategies with effective communication and negotiation skills.
- Capacity to work independently and collaboratively, embracing professional challenges and contributing to the long-term growth of Jensen Hughes.
