Position Summary
The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) is at the forefront of innovative research and development, providing critical technical evaluations throughout the acquisition process, as well as conceptual and detailed design, assembly, integration, testing, and operational support. Our team consists primarily of highly skilled mechanical and aerospace engineers, delivering national expertise in vehicle engineering, guidance, navigation, controls, robotics, electro-mechanical devices, embedded systems, fluid mechanics, propulsion, thermal control, orbital mechanics, mechanisms, structures, structural dynamics, and dynamic environments.
The Mechanical Systems Department (MSD) comprises approximately 20-25 engineers dedicated to offering technical mission assurance support, ensuring the reliability and integrity of moving mechanical assemblies (MMAs) and explosive devices utilized during spacecraft, launch vehicle, and missile system separation and deployment events. The Launch Mechanisms Section focuses on evaluating requirements, design, analysis, and testing of launch vehicle and missile systems' MMAs, including reusable systems, adhering to industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess moving mechanical assemblies and explosive devices for launch vehicle, spacecraft, and missile programs.
- Review and evaluate designs, analysis outcomes, test plans, command media, and relevant standards.
- Conduct analyses and modeling of moving mechanical assemblies, deployment, and separation systems.
- Collaborate closely with technical staff and management to address technical challenges and ensure mission success.
- Prepare reports and develop presentations for briefings to stakeholders.
- Support technical initiatives and collaborate with senior staff on program tasks.
Qualifications
To be considered for the Senior Mechanical Engineer position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field is essential.
- A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in support of launch vehicle, spacecraft, or missile programs in physical sciences or engineering is required.
- Willingness to travel occasionally and/or work outside standard hours to meet customer needs, approximately 10% as necessary.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance issued by the U.S. government, requiring U.S. citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidates may possess one or more of the following:
- Advanced degree in a STEM field is highly desirable.
- Experience with mechanical designs, mass properties, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with hardware integration and testing.
- Knowledge of multi-body dynamics analysis and hydrocode analysis tools.
- Experience with bearings, gear trains, moving mechanical assemblies, and deployment systems.
- Understanding of AIAA-S-114, SMC-S-016, and/or NASA-STD-5017A standards.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- An active security clearance issued by the U.S. government is preferred.
