POSITION OVERVIEW

This role plays a crucial part in the daily management of the Culinary Training Academy program. Key responsibilities include delivering approved curriculum content, facilitating training sessions, and guiding students towards successful completion of the program. Additionally, the role involves promoting the program, securing financial support, fostering growth, and enhancing community recognition. The instructor will also oversee kitchen operations in the absence of the Kitchen Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Culinary Training Duties

  1. Support recruitment efforts, including promoting the program and conducting interviews for prospective students.
  2. Coordinate teaching and instructional activities for culinary students.
  3. Assist the Business Administrator in developing and managing Culinary Training activities to achieve program objectives.
  4. Deliver instruction in culinary theory, practical lab exercises, and hands-on kitchen training.
  5. Evaluate student performance, providing constructive feedback to ensure adherence to course standards and training goals.
  6. Maintain accurate records and documentation to track class training and student progress.
  7. Collaborate with the Student Support Specialist to monitor and maintain records of all graduating culinary students, offering ongoing mentorship.
  8. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Kitchen Management Duties
  1. Lead all kitchen personnel, including volunteers, during shifts and in the absence of the Kitchen Manager.
  2. Assist the Kitchen Manager with catering responsibilities and emergency disaster responses.
  3. Provide meal services for special events, including Advisory Board meetings and community gatherings.
  4. Prepare meals during assigned shifts.
  5. Assist with the storage and receipt of food and supplies.
  6. Document and report any issues in writing to the Kitchen Manager.
  7. Support the Kitchen Manager in maintaining efficient kitchen operations, including food procurement, preparation, storage, and cleanliness.
  8. Ensure meal setup and cleanup are completed during shifts, including dishwashing and sanitizing equipment.
  9. Guarantee safe, sanitary, and appealing food preparation for various occasions.
  10. Schedule the pickup of supplies and donations.
  11. Research and communicate strategies for minimizing food expenses.
  12. Maintain a weekly schedule of assignments for students and volunteers.
  13. Collaborate with the Kitchen Manager to develop creative and nutritious weekly menus.
  14. Conduct monthly inventory of kitchen supplies and maintain daily usage records.
  15. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities

This position assists in supervising culinary students, community service clients, and food service volunteers in the absence of the Kitchen Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  1. High school diploma or GED required; certification from a Culinary Program or five years of experience in the hospitality industry preferred.
  2. Must embody integrity and a lifestyle that aligns with The Salvation Army's mission, particularly in ministering to individuals in recovery.
  3. Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  4. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  5. Knowledgeable in food service ordering, inventory management, budgeting, food preparation, and equipment maintenance.
  6. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present information clearly to students and community members.
  7. Must possess a food handlers' certification upon employment and complete manager-level ServeSafe training within 60 days of starting.
  8. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple tasks.
  9. Must maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  10. Valid California Class C Driver License required, with the ability to operate a DOT-regulated Salvation Army vehicle.
  11. Must pass an annual Motor Vehicle Report (MVR).
  12. Must be at least 21 years old.
  13. Will be required to pass a behind-the-wheel road test.
  14. Complete The Salvation Army vehicle course training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  1. Regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions; occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and extreme temperatures.
  2. Frequent use of hands for handling, tasting, or smelling food.
  3. Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  4. Ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs frequently.
  5. Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment.
