POSITION OVERVIEW

The Culinary Arts Instructor is tasked with designing, conducting, and managing a variety of culinary classes and events aimed at the consumer audience for the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in California (CA). This role encompasses food preparation, kitchen demonstrations, the development and revision of course materials, and overseeing food production and service, all while fostering an engaging educational environment. The Culinary Arts Instructor is also anticipated to contribute to the overall functioning of the institution and uphold the mission of the CIA.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, prepare, and deliver both public and private interactive culinary classes. Provide guidance and demonstrations for participants in the Culinary Arts programming, showcasing how to create delectable dishes in an enjoyable manner. Exhibit culinary techniques that are recognized as professional standards, in alignment with CIA's culinary demonstrations.
  • Collaborate with the Culinary Arts Manager to strategize consumer programming across both California locations.
  • Revise existing course materials as necessary to reflect food costs, seasonal availability, and procurement challenges, updating presentations accordingly.
  • Oversee curriculum updates, including instructor manuals, minor recipe adjustments, equipment modifications, and seasonal communication to relevant parties.
  • Facilitate the onboarding and training of on-call Culinary Arts Instructors, ensuring consistency in presentations and delivery, and maintaining the quality standards set by the CIA.
  • Coordinate with the Teaching Kitchen Manager to guarantee that all necessary supplies, equipment, and inventory are available for classes, employing effective purchasing systems and best practices for cost control and budget management.
  • Enforce all sanitation and safety protocols in accordance with California State Health Code and CIA standards.
  • Work alongside the Culinary Arts Manager to manage the food cost budget for each class; review orders for on-call Culinary Arts Instructors and make necessary adjustments.
  • Ensure that all food and beverage orders are categorized correctly to maintain precise tracking of program costs, remaining accountable for food expenses within established guidelines.
  • Stay informed about current trends in culinary arts.
  • Take responsibility for the equipment and facilities within the kitchen and/or classrooms.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and set a standard for all Culinary Arts staff.
  • Foster lasting relationships with culinary students.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Education:
  • High school diploma or GED is mandatory.
Experience:
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of professional culinary experience is required.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in culinary education and/or two (2) years of staff training in a kitchen environment is essential.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior experience in instructional and kitchen demonstration roles is advantageous.
  • Associate's Degree is preferred.
  • Advanced certifications such as CHE, ACF, or ProChef are beneficial.
  • ServSafe certification is desirable.
SKILLS REQUIRED
  • High proficiency in Culinary Arts, kitchen demonstrations, and safety/sanitary practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of professional cooking, food preparation, kitchen management, and service within the hospitality sector.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex concepts for students.
  • Capability to identify learning outcomes and implement strategies to achieve those objectives with students.
  • Strong teamwork, organizational, and interpersonal skills; must be adaptable and reliable.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required by business needs.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Capacity to stand for extended periods in a typical kitchen setting.
  • Ability to endure high temperatures while working near cooking equipment.
  • Must be able to handle common cleaning agents and chemicals associated with food safety and kitchen sanitation.
