Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the guidance of the Executive Director and Community Programs Director, with direct oversight from the Shelter Manager, the Shelter Support Staff plays a crucial role in the daily operations of the shelter, ensuring the well-being and safety of both the facility and its guests.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist eligible clients with the intake process, service provision, and necessary referrals.
  2. Direct clients to appropriate agencies or initiate the application process.
  3. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of community programs and available services.
  4. Adhere to regulations set forth by Agency, ESG, CSBG, United Way, and others.
  5. Foster and maintain relationships with service providers, volunteers, staff, and community stakeholders.
  6. Oversee daily shelter operations, including food service, cleanliness, safety, and security, to create a safe and effective environment for all.
  7. Manage inventory of shelter supplies and donations to support operations.
  8. Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding client interactions and incidents.
  9. Provide crisis intervention as necessary.
  10. Ensure accurate data entry and maintenance in the homeless management information system (HMIS) and agency database.
  11. Understand data requirements for reporting and program compliance.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  1. Maintain confidentiality regarding all program aspects.
  2. Comply with CAPCA's policies and procedures.
  3. Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal shelter policies.
  4. Follow mandatory reporting protocols.
  5. Participate in professional development training as required.
  6. Manage stress and challenges that arise from daily interactions with clients.
  7. Be prepared to administer first aid as needed, recognizing it as a secondary responsibility.
  8. Perform other job-related tasks as necessary for program operations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Educational Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma.
  2. Preferred experience in a shelter environment.
  3. Proficient in record management and document preparation, both in print and electronically.
  4. CPR and First Aid certification required within the first year of employment.

Physical Demands:

  • Good physical condition with the ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle with liability insurance for agency-related travel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and hear clearly.
  • Vision capabilities including close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds, using appropriate safety measures.
