Job Overview

Reports To: Circulation Services Supervisor

Position Objective:
Under the general guidance of the Circulation Supervisor, this role is essential in assisting library patrons and executing tasks related to the circulation of library materials. This position also involves directing patrons and telephone inquiries to the appropriate departments.

Key Responsibilities

The following outlines the primary duties associated with this position. Note that this list is not exhaustive, and additional responsibilities may be assigned:

  • Provide assistance to patrons at the service desk and via telephone, handling circulation-related tasks such as:
    • Checking out and renewing library materials
    • Placing holds and managing fees and fines
    • Registering new borrowers and clarifying library policies
  • Address issues with patrons who may disrupt library operations or attempt to unlawfully remove materials.
  • Support building security by:
    • Enforcing library policies regarding patron behavior
    • Participating in emergency procedures and responding to security alarms
  • Perform various circulation tasks, including:
    • Checking in materials and processing holds
    • Managing overdue notices and maintaining inventory records
  • Operate the central switchboard, taking messages and directing calls appropriately.
  • Prepare materials for shelving and ensure proper organization.
  • Conduct searches for claimed returned or missing items as assigned.
  • Make necessary announcements over the public address system.
  • Assist in other departments as needed.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong public service skills and the ability to explain library policies clearly.
  • Ability to perform tasks under pressure and make logical exceptions to policies when necessary.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow complex instructions.
  • Proficiency in using library automated systems.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to shelve materials at various heights and manage physical tasks associated with library operations.

Work Schedule:
This position may require flexible scheduling, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
