The position is a grant-supported role reporting to the Associate Dean of Interprofessional Education and Community Engagement within the Community Care Clinic. The Peer Recovery Specialist is intended for a compassionate individual with personal experience in substance use recovery. This role focuses on providing non-clinical support and advocacy for individuals pursuing recovery, assisting them in navigating available resources and establishing a sustainable path to wellness.
Key ResponsibilitiesPeer Support:- Provide individualized support to those in recovery, sharing personal insights to foster trust and motivation.
- Facilitate peer-led support groups and SMART Recovery meetings.
- Offer crisis intervention and support as necessary.
- Extend peer support to students from local educational institutions.
- Collaborate with local crisis response units and shelters to deliver peer support and case management services.
- Assist clients in connecting with community resources, including housing, employment, healthcare, and social services.
- Guide clients through enrollment in treatment programs and accessing mental and physical health services.
- Advocate for the rights and needs of individuals in recovery within the clinic and the wider community.
- Support clients in developing self-advocacy skills.
- Conduct outreach initiatives to raise awareness about recovery resources and services offered by the Community Care Clinic.
- Engage in community events and workshops to promote prevention and recovery while reducing stigma.
- Provide Narcan training in various settings.
- Work alongside a multidisciplinary team, including mental health professionals and social workers, to coordinate comprehensive care for clients.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to case discussions and treatment planning.
- Build partnerships with community organizations to facilitate prevention and treatment efforts while providing experiential learning opportunities.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions and progress.
- Prepare necessary reports and documentation as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to establish rapport and trust with clients.
- Knowledge of community resources and recovery-oriented care systems.
- Basic computer skills for documentation purposes.
- Capacity to work collaboratively in an interprofessional team environment.
- Empathy and understanding towards individuals facing substance use and mental health challenges.
- Commitment to personal recovery and modeling recovery-oriented behaviors.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
- Bachelor's Degree in addiction treatment/prevention or a related field preferred, or certification as a peer-support specialist, with relevant experience considered.
- Lived experience with substance use and a minimum of two years of sustained recovery.
