Overview: Blythe Construction, Inc. is in search of a proficient and knowledgeable Heavy Equipment Operator Training Specialist to enhance our Training & Development division. This position is focused on delivering comprehensive technical training for novice and limited-experience employees in heavy equipment operation, as well as conducting assessments for equipment operator candidates. The successful applicant will possess exceptional teaching abilities and a solid grasp of adult education methodologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead practical training sessions utilizing both equipment simulators and real heavy machinery, along with various construction support tools.
  • Assist in the creation and delivery of foundational heavy equipment operator training programs.
  • Conduct assessments for trainees to evaluate their progress and identify necessary learning interventions.
  • Observe and assess trainee performance throughout practical training activities.
  • Offer constructive feedback and additional assistance to trainees as required.
  • Develop and manage training schedules, collaborating with different departments and operational teams.
  • Communicate training schedules and updates, along with exception reports for management.
  • Oversee and compile reports regarding the utilization of training resources.
  • Utilize active learning techniques, critical thinking, and effective learning strategies to enhance the training experience.
  • Conduct comprehensive training sessions for new employees and provide on-the-job training support.
  • Facilitate upskilling training sessions for current employees.
  • Maintain and document records of training activities.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and best practices, integrating new insights into training programs.

Education and Experience: This position typically requires prior experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in operating heavy machinery, including but not limited to: Excavators, Backhoes, Off Road Trucks, Bulldozers, Front End Loaders, and Motorgraders.
  • Preference for candidates with experience in highway or roadway construction.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is mandatory.

Physical Requirements: The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Heavy Equipment Operator Training Specialist to successfully perform the essential functions of this role.

  • Regularly work an 8-hour shift, 5 days a week.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, bend, and walk.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull various materials/gear up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to use hands and feet to operate various equipment controls, including steering wheels, joysticks, levers, and foot pedals.
  • Ability to access stairs and vertical ladders, using three points of contact, to reach equipment operating controls.
  • Continuous mental focus required to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Potential limited exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and noise; ability to wear personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and hard hats.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing for extended periods on various ground conditions, including sand, gravel, pavement, and dirt.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.

Work Environment: The characteristics of the work environment described below are representative of those encountered in this position:

  • Work is performed 75% outdoors and 25% in a classroom training setting.
  • Frequent exposure to varying outdoor weather conditions.
  • Work environment may occasionally expose individuals to different levels of noise, grease, and dust typically found on construction sites; engineering controls and/or personal protective equipment may be necessary to ensure exposure limits are within OSHA specifications.
