Role Summary

We are seeking a Communications Specialist to enhance the visibility of our advocacy initiatives, particularly through the Center for Justice Across Generations (OCJAG). This role will focus on the New York Initiative for Children of Incarcerated Parents and the national initiative, See Us, Support Us (SUSU). The Communications Specialist will collaborate closely with the Director of NYCIP and the Communications Department to adhere to brand guidelines while updating and redesigning various printed and digital materials, including the SUSU website.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work alongside the OCJAG and NYCIP/SUSU teams to gather and create engaging content for social media platforms.
  • Assist in managing social media postings and interactions.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of monthly e-newsletters, daily social media updates, and the annual SUSU awareness campaign.
  • Design and produce new digital assets, advocacy tools, and visuals for social media and print materials.
  • Maintain the Osborne SUSU website, ensuring all content is current and visually appealing.
  • Support the creation of visual presentations, including PowerPoint materials.
  • Collaborate with the NYCIP Director to gather impactful stories and insights from young people and program staff.
  • Edit and design digital materials using software such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and CANVA.
  • Participate in weekly strategy meetings with the policy team and monthly communications meetings to align on advocacy priorities.
  • Assist in the development and updating of OCJAG/Policy Center materials, including policy briefs and legislative documents.
  • Attend relevant training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Engage in in-person collaboration with colleagues and attend external events as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field; or a High School diploma with two additional years of relevant experience.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in social media campaign implementation and communications content management.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, CANVA, and project management tools like Asana.
Essential Skills
  • Exceptional oral and written communication abilities.
  • Strong proofreading and editing skills.
  • Creative writing and project management expertise.
  • Proficient in both Mac and PC environments, particularly with Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Capacity for local travel within NYC.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills across various functions.
  • Proactive approach with a results-driven mindset.
  • Ability to build relationships at all organizational levels.
