We are seeking a full-time Mitigation Specialist for our Defense-Based Court Advocacy Services. This role primarily involves working with individuals under Parole supervision, including those facing violations and those in custody of the NYC Department of Correction. The Mitigation Specialist will conduct assessments to identify mitigating factors and advocate for alternatives to incarceration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough psychosocial evaluations to support defense attorneys in understanding client circumstances.
- Screen individuals in NYC Department of Correction facilities to identify candidates for advocacy services.
- Engage with clients and their contacts to formulate tailored service plans.
- Represent clients at Parole Hearings, advocating for favorable outcomes.
- Prepare comprehensive reports for defense counsel, judges, and relevant authorities.
- Facilitate client referrals and maintain communication with treatment providers.
- Perform additional duties as necessary to support client needs.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Forensic Psychology, or a related field.
- At least one year of relevant professional experience in a criminal justice setting.
- Proficient in conducting investigations and drafting court-related documents.
- Experience working with clients facing mental health challenges, developmental disabilities, or substance use issues.
- Demonstrated advocacy experience in court or similar environments.
- Ability to manage a diverse caseload effectively, ensuring timely interventions.
Essential Skills:
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, including public speaking.
- Strong interviewing and active listening skills.
- Empathetic approach to client interactions, with a focus on understanding their backgrounds.
- Critical thinking and analytical skills to assess information objectively.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise independent judgment.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and the criminal justice system.
- Familiarity with community treatment resources and referral processes.
- Proficient in database management and electronic record-keeping.
