Job Overview Norfolk Southern is seeking skilled individuals with recent expertise in the testing, installation, repair, and maintenance of telecommunications systems. This includes, but is not limited to, equipment such as radios, digital microwave systems, and radio frequency data link devices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure adherence to all railroad safety protocols, operational standards, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
- Install, maintain, replace, and inspect communication devices, including cables, computers, printers, monitors, radios, telephones, modems, wireless components, security cameras, batteries, connectors, and various testing apparatus.
- Handle VHF radios, data circuits, automatic equipment identification, closed-circuit television, radar systems, speaker installations, and other communication infrastructures.
- Execute cable cutting, splicing, and pulling on the ground, poles, and towers.
- Utilize trenching machinery for burying equipment and cables.
- Manage inventory deliveries and retrieve necessary parts for equipment maintenance.
- Transport tools and equipment to job sites as required.
- Install wiring in both office and field environments.
Compensation:
Pay rate is subject to modification based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement and may vary by location. During training, the pay is 75% of the Communications Electronic Technician (CET) hourly rate, currently set at $29.35/hr. Upon promotion to CET, the salary is approximately $8,335.26/month.
Training:
On-the-job training (OJT) may last up to one year to qualify as a Communications Electronic Technician (CET), with the potential for earlier promotion based on performance and qualifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an FCC license or NABOR certificate post-hire.
- Willingness to work a 6-day schedule with one designated rest day (5 on and 1 stand-by day).
- Capability to obtain a Class A CDL after hiring.
Preferred Qualifications:
- FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License.
- Experience with heavy equipment operation.
- Two-year technical degree or equivalent experience in network management.
Benefits:
Medical benefits are available from the first day of the second month after hiring (during training) with an 80/20 plan for employees, spouses, and eligible dependents. Union benefits become available after transitioning from Trainee status. Additional benefits include medical plans, life insurance, and a 401(k) plan.
