Position Summary

Kairos Power is in search of a driven and meticulous Process Design Engineer to be part of our Inert Gas System division. This role involves engaging in a collaborative setting to aid in the design, enhancement, and documentation of the Inert Gas System for our initial low-power demonstration reactor, upcoming commercial units, and associated testing systems. You will have the opportunity to make impactful contributions within a multidisciplinary team that is pioneering advancements in the realm of advanced nuclear energy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Generate engineering calculations and documentation for the sizing of process equipment and instruments, including vessels, heat exchangers, control valves, relief valves, compressors, and blowers.
  • Work closely with our internal procurement team and external suppliers to pinpoint components that meet system specifications.
  • Oversee the Request for Quotation (RFQ) process, methodically evaluating proposed solutions and meticulously reviewing datasheets, drawings, and documentation.
  • Engage with vendors to address Requests for Information (RFIs), ensuring a thorough understanding of product offerings.
  • Review and annotate piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and process flow diagrams (PFDs) to accurately depict system design.
  • Develop and document system design, operational modes, necessary controls and interlocks, and maintenance strategies for the entire plant lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Design, Structural, Instrumentation & Controls, Operations, and other Process Design Engineers to ensure designs fulfill plant requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Over 7 years of relevant industry experience in refining, chemical, or power generation process design engineering (or a comparable field).
  • Skilled in interpreting Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and process equipment datasheets.
  • Experience in direct collaboration with external vendors for the design and delivery of process equipment.
  • Familiarity with the HazOp process and proven experience in designing with a focus on safety to create resilient systems.
  • Knowledge of process simulation and/or hydraulic simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus, Pro/II, Hysys, AFT Fathom/Arrow, SiNet, Apros).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Able to work effectively within a highly collaborative team, demonstrating excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability for independent problem-solving.
  • Capable of resolving issues swiftly and effectively.
  • Prioritizes and ensures the safety of oneself and others.
  • Proficient in collecting, managing, and transferring knowledge proactively.
  • Ability to explore innovative approaches to enhance efficiency when addressing challenges.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for extended periods.
  • Effective communication with others to exchange information.
Safety and PPE Requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret hazardous warning signs.
  • Reporting of equipment issues or unsafe conditions.
  • Compliance with PPE requirements, including face masks, face shields, gloves, and safety shoes.
Travel Requirements
  • Occasional travel may be necessary (up to 20%).
Additional Requirements
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • May require non-standard work hours.
  • Occasional extended hours may be necessary to support critical project timelines.
