Role Summary

An Optical Systems Manufacturing Specialist is integral to the L3Harris Technologies Sonoma EO manufacturing team, primarily focusing on supporting optical procurement, assembly, and sensor integration and testing.

Manufacturing Specialists are tasked with integrating new products into the manufacturing process while providing support for product manufacturing and repair.

They are responsible for establishing and maintaining precise manufacturing and repair standards, as well as implementing and optimizing assembly and repair processes to minimize waste, reduce process variation, and lower costs.

Optical Specialists possess expertise in the procurement of fabricated optical components and coatings, along with the assembly of lens systems, which includes handling, cleaning, fixturing, centering, aligning, bonding, and testing.

Level III Manufacturing Specialists offer hands-on engineering support for development, production, and repair programs with minimal oversight.

Key Responsibilities:


The following outlines essential functions for this position, but does not limit the tasks that may be assigned.

Optical manufacturing engineering focuses on the optical and electro-optical elements of various job functions.

Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities as necessary.


• Support, maintain, and drive improvements related to Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) metrics for programs and facility-wide initiatives.

• Utilize knowledge of optical fabrication and coatings to provide concurrent engineering support for the design of complex electro-opto-mechanical systems, including DFX and Design to Cost inputs.

• Participate in peer reviews, stage gate design reviews, and design release processes, ensuring alignment with production flow, BOM structure, and DFX evaluations.

• Ensure close collaboration between manufacturing and test development teams.

• Implement New Product Introduction (NPI) processes to seamlessly integrate new products into manufacturing.

• Create and maintain Build Schedules and Production Flow diagrams.

• Develop and maintain assembly documentation (Manufacturing Procedures).

• Identify, develop, and coordinate the procurement and implementation of tooling and build fixtures.

• Create and maintain Production & Repairs Routers and Work Orders.

• Lead efforts to outsource manufacturing operations from procurement through final system testing and delivery.

• Provide process development, build coordination, technical support, and troubleshooting assistance to production and repair teams.

• Support Procurement in the selection, qualification, and maintenance of critical vendors using knowledge of optical fabrication and coatings.

• Assist in the inspection of optical components and assemblies, leveraging expertise in optical fabrication, coatings, centration, alignment, and handling.

• Contribute to the creation and material disposition of Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and Redlines.

• Support Material Review Board (MRB) activities and the creation and material disposition of Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and Failure Reports (FRs).

• Assist in failure investigations related to design, process, and workmanship issues identified in the field and during manufacturing, recommending and implementing corrective actions.

• Drive continuous improvement of designs, manufacturing processes, and engineering practices through the application of LEAN principles and Operational Excellence metrics.

• Incorporate lessons learned into new designs and production in a coordinated manner.

• Implement LEAN manufacturing processes and Operational Excellence initiatives, focusing on reducing Standard Hours and Build Cycle Times.

• Support the Bid and Proposal process with production, support, and manufacturing development estimates based on historical data and Build Standards.

• Assist in the development and implementation of the Manufacturing Engineering Department budget, including requests for expensed and capital equipment to support production.

• As an AS9100D Certified Company, adherence to internal processes is crucial to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures, supporting our quality system through the development of quality documentation.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
• Education: BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optics, or a related field, or equivalent training/experience. A preferred MS degree in Optics or Electro-Optics.

• Experience: 8 years in the manufacturing of complex electro-mechanical and/or electro-optical products and/or critical components.

• Knowledge of Optical Metrology (Interferometers, image quality metrics, alignment and test techniques, Labview, etc.)


Demonstrated ability to provide hands-on optical and/or electro-optical process engineering support to development, production, and repair programs with minimal management oversight.

Acknowledged technical leader with a proven ability to mentor others in their job responsibilities.


• Must be a US Citizen as defined by NIPSOM and able to obtain and maintain at least an Active SECRET / T3 security clearance; prior access to TOP SECRET SCI and SAP programs is preferable.

• Pre-employment federal level drug screening and background checks are standard.

Competencies/Skills/Experience:
• Proficient in optical manufacturing processes and techniques, including tolerancing, diamond turning, grinding, polishing, and coatings.


• Experienced in optical and electro-optical assembly processes, including fixturing, alignment, centering, staking, bonding, performance testing, handling, and cleaning of optical elements and assemblies.


• Familiar with the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of optical alignment, centering, and test equipment such as collimators, interferometers, and laser alignment stations.


• Knowledgeable in shop floor control activities, including training, procedure, and router development to effectively manage optical and electro-optical assembly processes.

• Experience in outsourcing manufacturing operations from procurement through final system testing and delivery.


• Ability to comprehend and apply optical testing principles.
• Knowledge of color science, NTSC, Digital, & PAL standards, as well as resolution & sensitivity measurements is considered an asset.
• Proficient in geometrical optics & imaging, radiometry, and CCD/CMOS/Thermal Imagers.
• Capable of reading and interpreting optical, electro-optical, mechanical, and electrical drawings.
• Familiarity with Optical Metrology (Interferometers, image quality metrics, alignment and test techniques, Labview, etc.)

• Technical background in design, production, and/or customer service.

• Proficient in MS Office and MS Excel; MS Project and Visio proficiency preferred.

• Knowledge of CAD systems and Manufacturing ERP systems is strongly desired.

• Understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles.

• Experience with DFX (Design for Manufacturability, Cost, Process Variation).

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interface effectively at multiple levels within L3Harris.

• Demonstrated leadership and team-building capabilities.

• Ability to make complex decisions with limited data while adhering to established delivery commitments.


• Requires solid influencing skills, particularly in the transition of designs from Engineering to Manufacturing.

• Ability to work collaboratively across various functions, including Business Development, Engineering, Senior Management, customers, and suppliers.
