Position Overview

AECOM is looking for an Environmental Project Specialist to lead a small, interdisciplinary team of resource experts focused on the review of natural and cultural resources, conducting technical surveys, reporting, impact assessments, and preparing necessary permitting documentation. This hybrid position is based in our San Diego office and reports to the Environmental Program Manager.

  • In-depth understanding of environmental regulations for linear projects in California.

  • Proven experience in coordinating with a diverse range of professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage environmental studies for large-scale, complex linear projects across various locations.
  • Experience collaborating with design teams to streamline environmental permitting processes.
  • Capability to leverage expertise to address business challenges effectively.
  • Experience mentoring and guiding peers and team members.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Engage in project and team meetings, including scheduling, agenda preparation, and note-taking.
  • Develop presentations and documentation related to current and proposed environmental permitting processes.
  • Contribute to strategies for process improvements.
  • Maintain oversight of environmental tasks across a portfolio of linear utility projects.
  • Plan and oversee environmental reviews and technical studies across various resource areas, including biological, aquatic, cultural, and stormwater resources.
  • Delegate tasks and manage team workloads to ensure timely project completion.
  • Formulate and manage environmental strategies, focusing on efficient permitting processes.
  • Collaborate with a larger team on design, permitting, land rights acquisition, and environmental approvals.
  • Oversee the preparation of environmental technical reports that comply with local and governmental requirements.
  • Assist clients with external agency communications and submissions.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on environmental planning and regulations.
  • Coordinate with project managers to ensure engineering plans meet agency requirements.
  • Inform internal teams about governmental regulations to support compliance during project phases.
  • Serve as the primary contact for clients.
  • Manage project status reporting for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Potentially oversee external consultants, ensuring quality deliverables.
  • Provide insights on planning, staffing, budgeting, and process improvements.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, land use planning, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in environmental reviews and permitting for utility or related industries.
  • A valid U.S. Driver's license is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree in a technical or business discipline.
  • Experience in developing planning documents for CEQA/NEPA review.
  • Project and client management experience, including oversight of multiple complex projects.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Resourcefulness and flexibility, with a focus on accuracy.
