Position Overview:

The Senior Urban Planner is responsible for supervising the planning and development of projects, ensuring compliance with zoning laws, land use policies, and other pertinent regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides expert planning consultation in the design, planning, and coordination of projects.
  • Collaborates with fellow planners, architects, and landscape architects to devise integrated, sustainable, and equitable solutions for intricate land planning challenges.
  • Facilitates discussions around research and analysis, including master plan level programming and space planning studies.
  • Engages in stakeholder outreach for community-focused land planning projects.
  • Attends to the diverse needs of private, public, institutional, and nonprofit clients.
  • Coordinates and leads discussions with multiple consultants simultaneously, including mobility, civil, infrastructural, financial, and zoning experts.
  • Evaluates natural and man-made factors impacting site development suitability across various project types.
  • Acts as a liaison with project management, other architectural team members, and consultants.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert on specialized systems.
  • Develops and articulates the lead technical perspective on projects.
  • Engages in discussions with the Partner and/or Principal regarding suitable technical solutions, products, and project delivery methods.
  • Provides mentorship on analytical and design graphics to junior team members.
  • Leads subject matter expertise and QA/QC design documentation and client materials.
  • Handles aspects of external project communications and prepares presentations with support from junior team members and subconsultants/clients.
  • Conducts concept and technical presentations for project meetings and reports.
  • Collaborates closely with directors and partners to advance agendas on urban futures, including trends in urban design and planning, sustainability, resilience, mobility, ecology, and infrastructure.
  • Works alongside the business development team on urban planning and design RFQs and proposals.

Qualifications:

  • APA accredited degree in Urban Planning, or a professional degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a closely related field.
  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience or a similar role with equivalent work experience.
  • Proficient in design software, including AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape, ArcGIS, Rhino 3D, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with public realm projects, encompassing both horizontal (street, landscape, and public space design) and vertical (architecture, massing, and façade articulation) aspects, with the ability to bridge multiple disciplines concurrently.
  • Experience across various project scales, from planning to smaller city planning/urban projects.
  • Experience in mentoring and QA/QC work for junior staff, including technical planning documents such as urban design guidelines and detailed site plans, sections, axonometric views, and diagrams.
  • Extensive knowledge of zoning and development codes.
  • Experience in design-led and project management roles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to integrate physical, social, economic, and sustainability factors into responsible designs for clients.

Compensation:

The hiring range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
