SUMMARY

BATES TECHNICAL COLLEGE is seeking qualified individuals for temporary teaching roles as adjunct instructors. The adjunct faculty member will be tasked with developing and delivering instructional content for students in a classroom setting.

ROLE OF THE ADJUNCT CHEMISTRY EDUCATOR

The Adjunct Chemistry Educator will be responsible for the preparation and instruction of chemistry courses and associated laboratory sessions. This role requires direct reporting to the Central Campus Dean of Instruction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Duties:
  • Deliver assigned Chemistry courses, ensuring high-quality instruction through various teaching methods, including in-person, web-enhanced, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Thoroughly prepare all course materials and lesson plans for chemistry courses, primarily CHEM& 121-Introduction to Chemistry and CHEM& 131-Introduction to Organic/Biochemistry.
  • Engage professionally and effectively with a diverse group of colleagues and students.
  • Provide students with clear expectations, evaluations, and timelines through well-structured topical outlines and standardized syllabi.
  • Support student achievement initiatives to promote retention, completion, and progression.
  • Design engaging and relevant assignments that demonstrate learning outcomes in practical contexts.
  • Respond promptly to student inquiries.
  • Offer individualized and small group instruction in both classroom and laboratory environments.
  • Ensure that instructional practices are based on current educational standards and are relevant to students' vocational training.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, instructional materials, and grades.
  • Utilize available technology to enhance student access to information and effectively deliver instructional content.
  • Assist in maintaining industry-based program accreditation and prepare students for relevant industry certifications.
  • Manage classroom dynamics to foster a conducive learning environment by addressing student conduct issues in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Oversee budget management, including requisition and inventory control of program-related equipment and supplies.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Actively participate in college-wide initiatives to support regional accreditation and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with College Student Services and advisory committees to enhance student employment opportunities and maintain job placement records.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development to enhance skills and knowledge through available courses and training.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to meet institutional objectives.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not include supervisory duties.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • A background check will be conducted upon offer of employment.
  • This position requires on-campus and remote work as necessary.
  • This role is part of a bargaining unit represented by the local union.
  • New hires must obtain a Professional-Technical Education Certificate within 30 working days if applicable.
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching at a community or technical college level or experience with college freshman/sophomore students.
  • Familiarity with the CANVAS learning management system.
