Position Overview:

The Senior Communications Manager will spearhead initiatives to enhance GMF's visibility and reputation within the US media landscape. This role is pivotal in leveraging GMF's expertise, events, and activities to generate impactful communication opportunities that elevate the organization's overall influence.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Establish and nurture relationships with influential journalists in the US focusing on foreign policy and related topics.
  2. Devise, develop, and execute innovative strategies to amplify media coverage of GMF's experts and initiatives within the US media.
  3. Provide guidance to GMF leadership, fellows, and experts on effective media engagement practices, including optimizing GMF outputs such as op-eds for media relevance.
  4. Collaborate with the Europe-based Senior Press Officer to formulate an op-ed strategy and oversee placements in US publications.
  5. Identify and capitalize on opportunities for press coverage surrounding events and publications, working closely with colleagues to enhance visibility.
  6. Draft press releases and create engaging content for GMF's digital platforms, including the website and social media channels.
  7. Manage media inquiries, coordinate interviews and press briefings, and oversee media logistics at events while monitoring GMF's media coverage.
  8. Engage top-tier journalists as moderators for events and ensure their effective involvement with GMF.
  9. Develop a toolkit with the Europe-based Senior Press Officer to measure and analyze GMF's media impact, providing regular updates to the Communications Managing Director and senior staff.
  10. Innovate original products to engage journalists with GMF content.
  11. Maintain and enhance the organization's media contacts database, identifying and addressing gaps in outreach to specific outlets and journalists.
  12. Strategically determine how GMF can engage key stakeholders to expand audiences and strengthen support for its mission in the US.
  13. Lead communications initiatives for the DC office in collaboration with the Communications Managing Director.
  14. Oversee the US communications team alongside the Communications Managing Director, stepping in to lead the GMF Communications team as needed.

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of the American media landscape with an established network among Washington-based foreign policy media; familiarity with European media is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated success in navigating media dynamics and effectively placing stories and op-eds.
  • Proficient in managing communications and workflows across different time zones.
  • Exceptional academic and journalistic writing skills.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; proficiency in German or French is a plus.
  • Strong interest in international relations, particularly in European and American foreign policy.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in communications or media relations.
