Job Summary

This leadership role oversees the strategic operation and maintenance of a large-scale animal protein production facility, encompassing a 195,000-pound ammonia system, 32-million-gallon wastewater treatment facility, and a rendering and steam generation operation. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, while maximizing productivity, efficiency, and quality in all areas of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all utilities, rendering, and wastewater processes operate in accordance with relevant regulations.
  • Operational Strategy: Develop and implement strategies to optimize productivity, efficiency, and quality across the facility.
  • Utility Management: Oversee the operation and maintenance of the ammonia refrigeration system, boiler/steam generation system, and plant utilities network.
  • Rendering and Wastewater Management: Monitor and maintain the performance of rendering equipment, ensuring optimal functionality and minimizing downtime.
  • Team Leadership: Lead the selection, onboarding, training, and development of team members engaged in utility, refrigeration, rendering, and wastewater activities.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Stay up-to-date with OSHA and Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) regulations, working closely with FSQA to ensure compliance and report any necessary work.
  • Safety Culture: Foster a culture that prioritizes safety, ensuring team members are trained and compliant with regulations to prevent workplace accidents.
  • Team Development: Develop a high-performing team through talent identification, development, and succession planning, supporting the company's expansion goals.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive efficiencies, accuracy, and stronger decision-making through a culture of continuous process improvement.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Work with the leadership team to provide input for strategic direction and business planning.
  • Problem-Solving: Diagnose downtime causes and equipment failure, developing strategies to eliminate these issues through reliability and safety improvements.
  • Organizational Goals: Establish and implement short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
Requirements

To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in Engineering and eight or more years of progressively responsible positions in manufacturing, including supervisory experience. Experience in food manufacturing is desired, as is formal ammonia refrigeration training and certifications. The successful candidate will also have well-developed management skills, utilizing sound management principles to lead a large team of employees.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language, with the ability to effectively communicate with the USDA, customers, sales, production, and management personnel.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, with the ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written, and/or verbal form.
